HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 17 WHITNEY ROAD CHARLES BURGESS HOUSE Charles H. Burgess was the builder of 17 Whitney Road. Burgess was a partner in Hall and Burgess, a real estate auctioneering and appraisal firm which had offices in the Adams Building (1880-85; 1889-90; NR) at 1536 Hancock Street. By 1923 the property was owned by Addie M. (Burgess) Rideout. Addie M. was married to Warren H. Rideout of W.H. Rideout and Company which dealt in groceries and provisions at 160 Washington Street in South Quincy. Whitney Road is one of several streets just east of Hancock Street.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 17 WHITNEY ROAD CHARLES BURGESS HOUSE This Shingle Style house exhibits the common practice of combining elements of Shingle Style and Queen Anne design. Here, a two-story corner bay is integrated into the compact massing of a house sheathed in shingles. The side gable contains a window with a curved shingled opening.
Emphasizing the house's horizontality is the string course, decorated with saw-toothed shingles, under the slight flare of the second floor. Double classical columns support the porch. The fenestration is irregular induding rectangular windows in many sizes and a diamond paned window under the porch, another vestige of the Queen Anne period. The house rests on a granite foundation. The recent replacement of the original bay tower window with one-over-one sash does not disrupt the overall integrity of the building.
