One of Quincy's few intact Federal period residences, it is the only known granite house built in the city, and therefore fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. Form No: 454 HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 92 WILLARD STREET The house at 92 Willard was erected by Jonas Kendall of Milton in the 1830s. It is one of the earliest residences in this area of West Quincy near the Milton town line. * tne Miton It is the only known granite house - Granste1 ever built in Quincy. West Quincy, the site of Quincy's granite quarries, is where the granite industry was based in the 19th century.
In 1856 James Graham of Milton, a stonecutter, bought the property, held it thirty years, and sold it in 1896 to George F. Fields, a large real estate dealer. The Fields family had their real estate and insurance business at 1445 Hancock street. By 1915. the property was sold to Lorenzo Caravaglio, owner of the Puritan Spring Bottling Company and the Granite City Ice Cream Company. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 92 WILLARD STREET The house at 92 Willard Street is significant as the only known granite residence to have been built in Quincy (one survives in the adjacent Town of Milton).
It is a simple and traditional late Federal period residence. on a slight rise, the house has rectangular massing, a gable roof and regular fenestration composed of six-over six sash windows. A hip-roofed frame wrap-around porch (enclosed along the Roberts Street facade and open along Willard Street) was added in the early twentieth century. A long one-story gable-roofed frame addition and attached garage were built in 1952. These additions clearly later and do not obscure the essential identity of the early 19th century granite house. A granite wall added in the early twentieth century runs across the Roberts Street side of the property (noncontributing).
