The finely detailed Queen Anne style house is among the best preserved of a type once common in Quincy and thus fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on fhe local level. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 53 REVERE ROAD C.F. PETTENGILL HOUSE This well-preserved Queen Anne house is located one block from the central business district of Quincy Center. The house was built by a prominent Quincy jeweler, Charles F. Pettengill, and remained in the Pettengill family until at least 1907. C.F. Pettengill, founded in 1876, was a retail establishment dealing in watches, jewelry, clocks, silverware, and spectacles with "Quincy Souvenir China" a speciality. The shop, built by Pettengil, was located at 126 Hancock Street next to the present Greenleaf Building.
Referred to as the "Dean of the jewelry business in Quincy." Pettengill enjoyed patronage from Weymouth, Braintree, and Milton. PETTENGILL HOUSE The addition of a two-story front gable and stylistic ornament to thebasic sidehall plan house was a common expression of the Queen Anne style in Quincy. The frame dwelling at 53 Revere Road is one of best intact examples of this type. Characteristic features are the clipped bay window, the rich patterned shingles, the mix of clapboards and shingles, the irregular fenestration, and the elaborate two-story porch.
Of particular note is the ornamentation of the porch with its heavy turned posts, spindle and fret balustrade, and spindle frieze filled with brackets and a sunburst design. Windows are varied including twelve-over-one sash, and the typical Queen Anne type--the single pane encircled by smaller lights. A two-story rear porch addition (1930s) is sympathetic to the design of the original house.
