Dating from the 1920s, a period of significanct commercial and public building in Quincy Center, the temple is a monumental NeoClassical design carried out by J. William Beal and Sons, active architects in Quincy during this period. The Masonic Temple fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- MASONIC TEMPLE 1156 HANCOCK STREET Part of the redevelopment of Quincy Center in the 1920s, the Masonic Temple is one of several masonry commercial and institutional buildings erected on Hancock Street during this decade. Substantial two and three story commercial and institutional structures replaced frame stores, houses, and taverns demolished after Hancock Street was widened in the mid-nineteen teens. Erected in 1926, the Quincy Masonic Building Association was by the 1930s. the headquarters for the Quincy Commandery K. T. No. 47. the St. Stehens Royal Arch Chapter, the Taleb Grotto MOVP of ER, the Manet Lodge, the Rural Lodge, and the Theodore Roosevelt Lodge. The Rural Lodge is the oldest Masonic group in the city having moved to Quincy in 1803 from Randolph.
Disbanded in the 1830s, the Masons reorganized in Quincy in the late 19th century and began a campaign to fund a new building. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 1156 HANCOCK STREET MASONIC TEMPLE The severe Neoclassical mode was the choice of architects J. William Beals and Sons for the style of the Masonic Building. Previously, the firm had built the Adams Building (1880-85; 1889-90; NR), the Elks Building (1924; #QC-252), and would design Bethany Congregational Church (1927; #QC-155) and the Granite Trust Company Bank (1929: #QC 171). The Masonic Temple is the finest Neoclassical building in the city.
The two-story square structure is set high on a basement of regular ashlar blocks with a flat roof hiden by a shaped parapet. Dominating the facade is a projecting pavilion composed of four giant Ionic coulumns, set in antis, supporting an architrave replete with Masonic symbols (a compass, a keystone, with HTWSSTKS, a triangle within a triangle and a crusader type cross). A large cascade of steps leading up to the main entrance is flanked by metal tripod tables, each on a base decorated griffin on a terra cotta plaque. The iconography of the building is not only decorative but also of a pedagogic nature indicating, in a graphic manner, the function of the building.
