VATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (1f appllcabie he Bellevue Standoipe is one of three vertical reservoirs (Forbes Hill #16-4: 1900-1902 Bellevue #16-1, 1914-1915; and Arlinston #/16-3, NR:9-27-1985, 1921) built by the Metropolitan Water Board as part of their distribution system and in response to demands for increasing amounts of water as suburban populations expanded. All three have a unique architectural style which clearly demonstrates the water board's commitment to good design and sensitivity to the surrounding community. Additionally the Bellevue Standpipe is an important component of the Metropolitan Water Board's in-town distribution system. The 1955 tower is not included ARCHFTECTURAL'S TENTFICANCE® for eligibility due to its recent date. EATAT is in Stony Brook Reservation, an uninhabited and rusged area which was mad! into a nark designed by the Brothers in 1894. The tower contains a steel tank which holds the water: the nasorry tower is actually concrete faced with rough cut granite stones. I: 1955-56 a large steel conlacement tover was built adjacent to the masonry tower. The progressic of towers in size and strle illustrates the prosression of building types and the ever increasir The stone tower is 330 feet above street level and 90 feet above high vater at Fisher Hill Reservoir (16-10) and was built to prevent ice on the steel tank. It also was used as an observation tower. Dexter Brackett was the Water Board engineer in charge; the steel tank was made by Walsh's Holyokce Steam Boiler Iorlts, Holyoice, MA. They also manufactured the irlington Standpipe (16-3).
The interior tark is 100' x 44'3" and the granite tower is 1141 x 47'. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain historical importance of structure and how the structure relates to the development of the community. this picturesgue, stone tower was built as part of the southern ertra high serrice distribucion system. It renlaced a smaller shingle style standpipe built in 1888. Water was pumbed from Fisher llill Reservoir (16-10), via a 20-inch main, to the Hyde Park Pumpirg Station and then un to Bellovue Hill where it was distributed, via gravity to the surrounding cormunities.
