longer in service, the Forbes Hill Standpipe was an important component of the Metropolitan Water Board's in-town distribution system. The Forbes HillStandpipe possesses integrity of location (con ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important design features and evaluate in terms of other structures within the community. Located in a residential neighborhood, adjacent to a park, the original Forbes Hº11 complex consisted of a 3,000,000 gallon capacity rectangular reservoir with a wall: around it; a stone çatehouse with two chambers. The intale chamber was 11' x 3' with screens, a 30" sluice valve and a 12" drain valvc. The othor chamber measured 11' x 91 x6'. It vao used for discharge to the standnipe and had valves for controlling water to and from the reserroir.
Perhaps the most distinctive element of the complex and the only surviving element was the standpipe which was built of steel and enclosed with a granite tower which has a crenelated top with an observation deck (now closed to the public). The standpipe held 2,000,000 gallons of water and was 260! abov sea level. The complex was built by Beckwith and Quackenbush, Nohawk, New York under the direction of Dexter Brackett, Engineer of the Metropolitan Water Board Distribution Department. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain historical importance of structure and how the structure relates io the development of the community. The Forbes Hill Reservoir and standpipe were built by the Metropolitan Water Board to supply the City of Quincy water after it joined the Water vystem in 1397. Pipes from Chestnut Hill (Area fed the Reservoir and standnipe, which then supplied the surrounding town bs gravity.
In 1895 the Board of Health recommended a standpipe with a canacity of 2,000,000 gallons. Board, howerer, determined almost 5,000,000 gallons were necessary which would require a leservoir in addition to a standpipe. In 1955, after a drowning, the reservoir, waich was not being used, filled in and the gatenouse demolished. The standpipe was taken out of service at the same tine.
