SIGNIFICANCE The Abbott-Stinson house is traditionally dated c.1720-1726. This is consistent with the quirk-beaded frame seen throughout the west side, which was probably the kitchen and kitchen chamber. These elements are similar to the frame of the Parson Barnard House in North Andover (c.1715) and several other early 18th century houses in Andover.
As an excellent example of the transition from First Period exposed, decorated framing to the vernacular Georgian interior finish of the second quarter of the 18th century, the house meets Criterion C. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Abbot-Stinson House is a two and a half story, five bay, central chimney house with projecting one story Federal style lobby entrance and nearly regular fenestration with four windows below and five windows above on the clapboarded facade. Originally one room deep, its form was changed by later rear additions of the 20th century. The west elevation has one central window in the attic and two in the second floor, and two evenly spaced on the main block of the first floor and an added side leanto with two windows. The east end is nearly the same, but there are three contiguous first floor sash and no additions to this end.
There was an old barn on the property, now removed; a modern garage located to the rear of the east side is consistent with the suburban setting. An old stone wall surrounds part of the property along Stinson Road. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The original plan appears to have been one room on both sides of the 18th century chim- ney, although the west room was later subdivided and the (kitchen?) fireplace closed in. The staircase in front of the chimney is a closed string triple-run stair and has sheathed wall from the second floor to the attic. There is no evidence, however, in ron che gieheneneand tus enopoaed by a coon hno en hand ir ao aaa the attic frame (principals with purlins and ridge pole) or stone cellar, that the house began as a one-room plan.
The west rooms have exposed summer and tie beams, in the normal longitudinal and transverse directions respectively, both with quirked beads running to the ends without stops. The posts, girts, and plates are also quirk-beaded where exposed. The second floor west side has flared gunstock corner posts. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The raised panel fireplace wall of the parlor and chamber above, with their boxed beams, plaster ceilings and other boxed framing members, may be largely original. The slightly larger east rooms (parlor and parlor chamber) have good 18th century raised paneling, and the summers and other framing are boxed. All ceilings are plastered. LATER ALTERATIONS The original kitchen has been subdivided parallel with the original rear wall to form a closet, hallway and bathroom with the addition of a partial leanto and a modern rear ell.
The west chamber has been partitioned along the tie beam to form a wide hallway with modern closets next to the chimney stack and a bath inserted behind the chimney. In the 1940's, a one-story rear ell containing a kitchen and living room was built.
