SIGNIFICANCE The William Foster House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its surviving transitional First Period frame under criterion C.
The quirk beading on all exposed timbers is typical of transitional houses of the 1720's. The transverse summer beam is an unusual feature, and its relationship to the one cell plan is worthy of further study. Investigation under the boxing on the southwest addition may lead to further information important under Criterion D. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION A complex house of three major periods, the Foster House contains a two story First Period core of three bays with irregular fenestration on the east side, now without the chimney at the south end. About 1750 there was a one room, two story addition of a reused frame made with a roof at right angles to the southwest corner; this addition includes a chimney bay and modern lobby entrance between this and the origiral chimney core. To its north was added a larger two story central chimney house, (c.1790-1800,) with a one story lobby entrance.
A two story gabled ell, with a modern one story gabled lobby, forms a northwest wing and gives the house a modified U-plan. The house and barn complex are set back from Central Street within the remaining five acres of the original tarm, and retain an agricultural setting in an otherwise suburban location. The house was renovated in 1965, and in 1986 was repainted after exterior sandblasting to remove old paint from the clapboarás. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The only remaining First Period evidence is the frame of the core structure, traditionally dated c. 1660 but with deeds back to 1635. The frame is quirk-beaded on all exposed timbers, and thus must be dated to the early 18th century (perhaps c. 1720). There are three bays in this section, divided on both floors by an exposed quirk-beaded tie beam.
Thus the first floor summer beam is transverse although it appears as longitudinal in relation to the later fireplace. The present modern kitchen probably occupies what was once the original chimney bay, although all framing on the first floor in this bay is covered by modern work. On the second story west wall and north end the corner post and girt are quirked in the room above the present kitchen where they attach to the c. 1790-1800 addition. The shared chimney block between the original core and the southwest addition, (itself an older but compietely boxed frame,) must have repiaced the original chimney stack about 1750. This chimney has been completely rebuilt. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The interior of the north addition is a good example of Federal work throughout, with a staircase next to the central chimney, mantels and Federal doors.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house is associated with significant trends in the history of American education. For 22 years, William Foster Jr. kept a school for about 25 boys who did not wish to attend Phillips Academy or who wished to qualify for that school. The late 18th century additions were made to add more dormitory space. In 1975 there still remained some of the boys' names scratched in the windows.
