SIGNIFICANCE In its First Period frame, and distinctive type of construction, the Blanchard/Upton house is significant under Criterion C. It is an outstanding example of a well restored classic early 18th century saltbox. There is no apparent evidence that the house grew in stages (as the 1975-7 B-form suggested) ; the frame is integral throughout, with guirked beading typical of several early 18th century Andover houses. (It was built between the time Thomas Blanchard acquired the land in 1699 and his death by 1740 when his son, Josiah, inherited the farm.) It is thus an excellent example of the integral leanto roof and plan, with the variant of the upper leanto extending only some two thirds along the rear and extended at the first floor by one story sheds. The feather-edged sheathing suggests a c. 1730 date, although the house may have been built earlier (c.
1700-1720) and the present interior finish added c. 1730-40 when Josiah Blanchard inherited the property. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Blanchard-Upton house is a five-bay, central chimey house with a center entrance. It has an integral rear lean-to, which provides the classic "saltbox" profile from the east end. The leanto continues about 2/3s along the rear wall before ending at a one story shed addition, recently modernized, and a modern one-story ell extending from the rear northwest corner parallel to the main block. The west end gable overhangs the plane of the original side wall, probably with a small hewn jetty. The house has recently been excellently restored inside. Set back from a by-passed section of Osgood Street, the former farm setting has recently been subdivided, with five contemporary houses under construction.
(1989.) MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The frame of the house is quirk-beaded and exposed throughout, with longitudinal summers on the two main first floor rooms and transverse tie beams in the rooms above. All ceilings are now plastered. The large 10 foot wide fireplaces in both first floor rooms have been restored and each have smoke panels in the back; the west room fireplace has a rear beehive oven. Both fireplace walls are vertically sheathed with feather-edged boards in red paint.A sheathed staircase leads to the second floor and another to the attic in front of the massive brick chimney. The upper west room (kitchen chamber) has feather-edged vertical sheathing on the fireplace wall and horizontal feather-edged sheathing on the three exterior walls.
Since the integral leanto stops along the chimney girt of this room, there is a single rear window in addition to the two on the facade and single end window in this room. There are no fireplaces in the rear leanto, although there are built-ins for kettles on the ground floor suggesting alteration for a later use. There is clear evidence in the cantilevered ties in the east end leanto that the roof line and rafters are integral. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES 'The interior finish is an excellent example of typical second quarter 18th-century pine sheathing, used in both vertical and horizontal directions, with doors and stairs typical of the period. The house is said to have the only room in Andover sheathed on all four walls. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Thomas Blanchard was a cordwainer, and a shop formerly located across the driveway was built by a grandson who was also a shoemaker.
