SIGNIFICANCE The Sawyer house retains integrity of location, setting, workmanhip, and association.
Its form and construction embody - the distinctive characteristics that make it eligible under Criterion C, while the boxed elements of its possibly later addition are likely to yield more information on First Period construction, and qualifies under Criterion D. The early exposed frame of the east main rooms is clearly of the first decades of the 18th century, and the width of the framing and the proportions of the west rooms suggest a similar or slightly later construction date for that section. The molded post heads suggest .a ca. 1700 date, for the right-hand core at least, on the basis of comparison with other houses in the survey area. A roof fire in the attic has confused evidence there, but it now appears that the main front rooms of the house were of two builds.
EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Sawyer House, built in the first quarter of the 18th century, may have begun as a single-cell house that was enlarged to a 5-bay, central- chimney, lobby-entrance, two-story, double-cell structure, as the principal rafters show evidence of collars on only the left side for the principal and purlin system. The right side appears to be the earliest core of the much-enlarged house. 19th and 20th century additions include a 2-story ell with a brick chimney stack at the juncture with the rear northeast corner of the main block, a 2-story sun porch with another rear 2-story shed-roofed addition along the rear wall, and a 1 1/2-story ell extending from the west gable-end to the depth of the rear addition. Across the facade of the house, a 2-story portico of seven square posts was added in the 1860's.
Beneath the portico, a lobby entrance and two Victorian bay windows protrude from the original plane of the building. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The rooms at both stories to the right of the lobby entrance and stairs show clear evidence of First Period framing. They are 20' x 25 in size. On the first floor, there is a 20.5'-long longitudinal summerbeam, supported on the east gable wall by a 12"-wide prick post with wide flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops and an elaborately carved and molded post head. The 12"-wide summer is decorated with quarter-round chamfers ending in 3"-long lamb's tongue stops. Added width beyond the boxed, 17"-wide chimney girt suggests that the chimney was replaced, perhaps when the left section was built. The ceiling is plastered, but the summer is exposed 7" below it. The four corner posts are boxed.

At the second story, the 22'-long tie beam, (10.5" wide; 6.5" exposed below the ceiling,) acts as the summer in the normal fashion. It is decorated with a 2" flat chamfer and 3"-long lamb's tongue stops, which terminate 5" from the plates and gunstocked story posts. The posts have simple chamfers; the remaining frame is boxed. The left-hand rooms are boxed, but show evidence of summers and other beams of nearly the same width. The lower left room has a 18.5' boxed summer, 12" wide; the chamber has a 10"-wide tie beam, also boxed.
This similarity of proportion may suggest that the rooms are either original or were added during the First Period. SIGNIFICANT LATER FEATURES The central chimney is of later date, brick above the fieldstone foundation. In the central stairway there is a 19" x 31" smoke closet at the landing, with horizontal wooden poles for hanging meat still in place. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house was apparently built on land formerly part of the Gov. Endicott grant of the 17th century. The early ownership is confused, at best, as Sidney Perley assigns the date of first construction to Stephen Gould ca. 1750. The farm was later owned by the Kilham family until 1802, when it was purchased by Dr. George Sawyer. It was in the Sawyer family until 1940, during which time it acquired the Mt.
