SIGNIFICANCE The Captain John Thorndike House retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in its survivng two-phase First Period frame under Criterion C. The three-phase construction of this eighteenth century structure is typical of the growth of many single-cell First-Period houses over time.
The evidence of a First Period single-cell integral lean-to house preserved in the right section may provide important information on this rarely-surviving early house form under Criterion D. The two schemes of frame decoration in the two phases provide an excellent illustration of consecutive late First Period decorative techniques. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Captain John Thorndike House is a two-and-a-half story, five-bay central chimney clapboarded structure. The original single-cell two- and-a-half story house with integral lean-to received a single-cell two-and-a-half story addition to the left of the chimney late in the First-Period. The new section to the left acquired an added lean-to during the eighteenth century.
In the nineteenth or twentieth cen- tury, the right two-thirds of the lean-to roof was raised to a shed dormer, and a small two-story gabled ell extended from the right rear. MAJOR FIRST-PERIOD FEATURES The two phases of the house exhibit two different late First Period frame decorative schemes. Evidence that the original right first-phase had an integral lean-to is visible on the second floor, where the now cut-off ends of the original rafters are still joined to the extended tie beams. The 15'6" (deep) x 16' first-floor right room exhibits the pine frame and transverse summer beam typical of Beverly First-Period construction. The transverse summer, end girt, and corner posts have bevel chamfers with taper stops. The front story post has molded jowls and the date of "1702" originally carved on the front of the head.
The chimney girt has been replaced, and the large fireplace was altered in 1937. The altered kitchen retains evidence of the original rear end corner post. A neighbor claims that the original kitchen lintel is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York; this needs to be verified. The right chamber also has bevel chamfers with taper stops on exposed framing members. Both floors of the second-phase exhibit fine, late transitional, quirk-beaded exposed framing. The (16' x 16'6") first-floor left room has guirk-beaded transverse summer, girts, and posts, with simple raised-field panelling on the fireplace wall which could be contemporary with the decorated frame. The left chamber has exposed quirk-beaded framing and vertical feather-edged sheathing on the fireplace wall which may be later, as it surrounds a very small fireplace opening.
In the attic, the original integral lean-to roof has pine principal rafters with four purlins. The second pair of rafters in from the right-end has dove-tail mortises for collar beams. The roof pitch in the original section is 50 degrees. The roof over the added left room also has a 50 degree pitch, but the added lean-to has a different pitch visible in the attic and on the exterior of the house. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house is associated after 1760 with Captain Joseph Rea, grandson of the original owner, and a prominent militia captain, member of the Committee of Correspondence and Safety, and officer in the Continental army who participated in the 1776 Christmas attack on Trenton.
