SIGNIFICANCE The William Livermore house retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in the frame of its original First-Period, single-cell core under further study in connection with the original single cell plan of the house under Criterion D.
The growth of the First-Period, single-cell structure into a full 22222 double-pile house during the Second Period is typical of the fate of many early houses, which were enlarged rather than rebuilt. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The William Livermore house is a two-and-a-half story, five-bay, central chimney, clapboarded structure, two-cells deep, with small, gabled entrance vestibules on the front and right facades. The house began as a late First-Period two-and-a-half story, single-cell house to the right of the chimney. A single-cell, two-and-a-half story addition to the left of the chimney early in the Second-Period produced a two-room, central chimney plan. The house was later dou- bled in size with the addition of a rear file of rooms and a new roof. Consequently, the central chimney stack protrudes through the front slope of the new roof.
Recent re-clapboarding revealed that the original single-cell end of the house is sheathed in vertical boards, while the new addition has horizontal sheathing. The outline of the 30 degree pitch of the original roof was clearly visible where the old and new sheathing met. MAJOR FIRST-PERIOD FEATURES The right front rooms of the house exhibit good late First Period features which suggest a circa 1700 construction date rather than the 1671 date based on deed Further research will be necessary to confirm the construction date. The 1es ar i8: first-floor room to the right, 6'3" in height, has an exposed and chamfered frame. Lamb's tongue stopsans The transverse summer beam and the chimney girt have bevel chamfers with 1 haneers chenersy The end girt and jowled posts have bevel chamfers with taper stops, while the front and rear girts have bevel chamfers which run to the edge of the beam.
The partially exposed oak joists are 23" apart, confirming a late First Period date. The sills are partially exposed. A strange 7.5" wide horizontal flat pine board is nailed on the three outer walls 2' 4" up from the sills. These two unusual features plus the vertical exterior wall sheathing may suggest plank-frame construction; the strange horizon- tal board substituting for angled braces. The very wide fireplace has a recessed smoke panel. Simple vertical feather-edged sheathing covers the fireplace wall, with a later molded cornice applied under the edge of the chimney girt. The 6'3" high, right chamber has thicker, later plastered walls, through which the flared heads of the posts protrude. The exposed summer tie beam has bevel chamfers with lamb's tongue stops. All other framing members are covered.

The original rear rafter of the one-cell deep house is still visible in the end wall of the present right-hand attic room. There were two purlins per slope, with a roof pitch of 30 degrees. The rear rafter at the left end wall of the second-phase is similarly visible. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The second-phase rooms to the left, stairway, and the first-phase right chamber exhibit good early second period details, suggesting a circa 1725-30 construction date for the addition. The lobby exhibits a good early second period stairway, with turned balusters and molded rails.
The first-floor newell post is turned with a The 16! x 18' first-floor, second-phase room has a fine paneled fire- bace wali, boxed framing members, and the impression of a small original window in the plaster of the present rear interior wall. The left and right chambers both have simple early Second-Period fireplace walls with vertical feather-edged sheathing and two horizontal raised field panels over the fireplace. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house is associated with the Livermore Whittredge Sr. and Jr., who were members of the Committee of Correspondence and active privateers during the Revolutionary.
