SIGNIFICANCE 50 Essex Street retains integrity of design, materials and workmanship. It incorporates into a larger building the core of a unique building type, with unusual two-bay plan, (without chimney bay,) and single-story height, which together with its characteristic late First Period building methods and decoration, make it eligible under Criterion C.
The documentary history of an earlier meeting house that this building was once thought to be can be traced to 1672. The 1716 documentation post head. The building is of unique informational quality, and is of ine orr ii traninte i a congee for establishing a grammar school on the original site of this building matches the physical evidence of the surviving structure. Although moved to its present site, it retains its ca. 1716 framing, as evidenced by the guirked beading and flat chamfers on its beams, as well as the molded eligible under Criterion D, as well. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION 50 Essex Street is a small 1 1/2-story cottage, the interior framing of which discioses two bays thought to represent the moved frame of a First Period Beverly schoolhouse. The building today is a four-bay structure with a doorway flanked by two windows to the left and one to the right.
The gable end has a single window at the main floor and attic levels. There is a late 19th-century stove chimney in the middle of the later pitched roof. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The main room is 21' wide by 17' deep, with a frame of either oak or hard pine. The summer tie is quirk-beaded. The two end girts have simple narrow flat chamfers with tapered stops. The east room is a later addition, and the original girt separating it from the main room has chamfers only on the inside, since the other originally faced the exterior wall. laths The split graffiti, and of the later, (18th-century?) addition have childrens' drawings as are early school.
