SIGNIFICANCE The Exercise Conant house retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its late seventeenth century First- Period frame under Criterion C.
The nearly intact survival of the single-cell house as the ell of a larger Second-Period structure provides an opportunity to further our understanding of the once numerous single-cell house. The house is an example of the way in which some First-Period houses were enlarged in the Second-Period by being relegated to the status of unfashionable ells, (often used for utilitarian purposes such as kitchens), behind larger and more fashionable new main rooms. The joist spacing suggests a 1670's construction date according to Cumming's charts; the flat chamfers may place the house in the 1680's.
EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION: The Exercise Conant House is the First Period, northern ell of the two-and-a-half story, five-bay Georgian house built by the Reverend John Chipman House, which has a dentillated cornice and an original fine Second-Period, central doorway with fluted pilasters and a broken-arch pediment with pineapple finial in the center. The First Period Conant ell is a single-cell, two-and-a-half story structure, three bays wide, possibly originally oriented north, with chimney to the left. The large chimney stack pierces the roof ridge of the ell at its juncture with the main house and is barely visible rising behind the far right ridge of the roof of the main facade. The roof ridge of the First Period ell, which is 40 degrees in pitch, runs perpendicular to the ridge of the main house.
MAJOR FIRST-PERIOD FEATURES: The northern ell of the present structure contains late seventeenth century detailing which identifies it as the single-cell Exercise Conant House reduced to an ell by Reverend John Chipman after 1715. The single room measures 12' x 19'6" with an 8' first floor ceiling. Photographs belonging to the owner reveal brick-nogging between 220ngting to (re onar e the studs in the walls. The room was originally entered from the left by a staircase-lobby in front of the chimney. The oak frame is exposed and chamfered. The molded posts are exposed, with bevel chamfers with lamb's tongue stops under the post heads. The longitudinal summer beam has bevel chamfers with raised flat collars Bede1chanters tongue stope The chimney, end, front and rear girts are decorated with and lamb's tongue stops.
The end and chimney girts have additional lamb's tongue stops discontinuing the chamfers under their intersection with the summer beam, an interesting aesthetic touch. The second floor does not have visible First Period features, but joists visible from the attic are 18" apart. The attic reveals a principal rafter and common purlin roof in three differently sized bays, with the chimney bay 7'7" wide, the center bay 5'9" wide, and the end 6'3" wide. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The main portion of the present structure comprises the Reverend John Chipman house, built sometime after he acquired the Conant House in 1715, and containing much fine Second-Period interior finish as well as the excellent exterior doorway. The north parlor, in particular, has fine raised-field paneling, molded cornices, and door and window surrounds on all four walls. The fireplace opening is surrounded by bolection molding. HISTORICAL INFORMATION Exercise Conant sold a house and barn on this land to his cousin John Conant in family of fifteen chil- dren. The house is associated with this prominent local clergyman who was responsible for most of its construction. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Laphan, Alice Gertrude.
