SIGNIFICANCE The Rea Putnam Fowler House has integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship in its First Period frame and surviving original plaster cove cornice. The building therefore meets criterion C.
The single cell plan with integral lean-to is representative of a larger number of First Period buildings, while the presence of the low end wall girt on the chimney end, where head room was not a requirement, is an option apparently chosen by only a few carpenters of the period. The plaster cove cornice is one of the three remaining in the study area and reflects a mode of decorative embelishment which came into fashion at the close of the First Period. The slot for a door bolt cut into the frame itself was noted in several other houses, all located in northwest Essex County towns. The facade is marked by a one story pilastered entrance porch of 18th or early 19th century construction date, and by a plaster cove cornice at the eave.
Fenestration is multi-light sash windows with simple frames symmetrically placed on the facade. The slim central chimney is a 19th century replacement of the original. A second chimney in the lean-to was built in the 20th century. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES In the original (c.1700) part of the house on the west the oak frame is exposed through out, while in the newer (c.1725) part the pine frame is boxed. The left hand rooms are 19 1/2' square. The right hand rooms are 15 1/2' wide. Joist spacing on both sides is 23-24" on centers. Joists in the left hand rooms are, according to the owner, whitewashed, indicating that they were originally exposed. The transverse summer beam in the left hand (west) room has 2" wide flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The summer beam is supported front and rear by posts with flat chamfers and moulded heads.
In the rear post is found a slot to receive a door bolt. Other beams have 1-1 1/2" wide flat chamfers, as do the beams in the original portion of the lean-to. In the 9' wide lobby, a portion of the original end wall girt survives next to the stairs. The girt, exhibiting pegs for studs 28" apart, was set a foot or so lower than the girt on the opposite end of the house. The jowled shape of the flat-chamfered posts reiterates in longer dimensions the shape of the posts below. The end tie beam has a 1 1/2" wide flat chamfer and lamb's tongue stops. The front and rear plates have no chamfers The plates and end tie beams have peg hole evidence of rising braces. The front plate has a third peg just medial(?) to where the braces are tied in. The additional peg may indicate the location of the original window studs. In the attic the roof framing is of principal rafters and common purlins. The character of the framing of the newer portion is slightly different than that of the old portion (purlins are shaped at the ends to fit into narrow trenches in the rafters, for example). Nail holes where studs were toe-nailed to the rafters at the original right end wall of the building provide further evidence that the building began as a single cell building.
SIGNIFICANT LATER FEATURES The right hand room is embellished with well-executed Second Period raised field paneling on the fireplace wall, and crown moldings at the tie beam The lobby and right hand room exhibit simple Federal Period finishes. The stairs are enclosed to the handrail with beaded sheathing. - The right hand room has a pilastered mantelpiece and plain dado with molded chair rail and base board. The cellar under the left hand room retains a massive spanning beam with butt cog joists. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house was built by Joshua Rea, farmer, c.1700. The extension of the house by a second cell with integral lean-to is typical of evolutionary development of houses in the study area, while the use of pine, rather than oak, for the later frame reflects the acceptance of pine as a suitable wood for framing in the early 18th century.
The building is also noteworthy as an example of a sensitive 1930's restoration. Ellerton and Catherine Brehaut, resident overseers of SPNEA's Fowler house, and friends of the Society's founder, William Sumner Appleton, restored the house with the advice of Dr. Arthur Stone Dewing, fashioning simple fireplace wall finish out of beaded sheathing obtained by removing a later partition, and leaving in place early plaster on the ceilings.
