The Hazen-Kimball-Aldrich house retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in its surviving late First Period under Criterion C. The two-phase construction visible in the frame is a good example of the way in which initially one-cell dwellings were rapidly enlarged as the finances and needs of the owners dictated.
EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The First Period portion of the Hazen-Kimball-Aldrich house is a 2 1/2 story 5 bay central chimney structure with an added lean-to. larger 2 1/2 story barn (15 bay) was drawn up to the left-hand end and converted to living space in 1906. A two-story enclosed porch projects from the left end of the barn addition. The right-hand rooms and chimney bay of the house comprise the original single cell 2 1/2 story dwelling. The left-hand rooms were added within a few years of the first construction and the lean-to followed probably by the mid 18th century. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The house's chamfered late First Period frame is exposed in two rooms, and there is clearly visible evidence of the stages in the building's growth. In the right-hand room, there is an exposed longitudinal summer beam, with flat chamfers and extremely long lamb's tongue stops.
Underneath 18th century plaster on the ceiling, white washed joists, spaced 19-20" on centers may be seen in certain places. The fireplace has apparently been altered and its trim partly removed, but if the original firebox occupied the entire recess, it would have been wider than usual. There is a small cubical compartment built into the front of the chimney, accessible from the closet under the stairs. In the left-hand room the longitudinal summer beam is boxed and other framing members are not exposed. In this room white washed joists, 18-19" on centers are visible through holes in the 18th century ceiling plaster, which is applied to split lath. In the right-hand chamber, the summer tie is boxed. The left hand chamber has an exposed summer tie beam with flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops.
There is vertical feather edged sheathing on the fireplace wall and one large overmantel panel. rear wall the plate is visibly framed, with a mortise, into the chimney post and girt, and so it is possible to verify that the left hand part of the frame was added to the right-hand portion. In the lean-to attic, the rafters are clearly butted up against the plate of of the house; hence the lean-to was added, not integral.
Along the rear plate, up under the lean-to rafter, there is still nailed a single row of original clapboard almost the whole way across, with nail holes on the studs showing where other rear clapboard of the two-cell house were. The position of the top clapboard is evidence that clapboards in this period come right up to junction of roof and wall. Tne attic reveals a purlin roof. rafters are slightly larger in the earlier (right-hand portion) of LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES An interesting assemblage of mid 18th c. raised field paneling survives on the fireplace wall of the left-hand first floor room and includes the only example known to the surveyor of the set of moldings usually found on door frames incorporated as an enframement for the chimney breast and mitered at the upper corners. In the lean-to, there is a fireplace with smoke panel and rear oven.
The current owner had to rebuild the firebox above the shelf of the smoke panel but the rest of the chimney is apparently original. The house has have been carried out. however, to repair the interior of the house.
