SIGNIFICANCE The Adams-Clark House retains integrity of location, materials, design and workmanship in its late First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C.
The building is representative of a large group of transitional structures where decorative embellishment of the exposed frame becomes minimal, and forward-looking finishes such as vertical feather-edged sheathing appear. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Adams-Clark House is a 2 1/2 story, 5 bay wide, one room deep house with a c. 1800 wing on the right side and later additions to the rear. The house probably began as a single cell structure composed of the right hand rooms and chimney bay. Symmetrical fenestration, sash windows with simple enframements, a central chimney and a pedimented doorway characterize the clapboarded exterior. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features are visible on the right-hand rooms and lobby. In the right-hand room, there is a transverse hardwood summer beam with flat chamfers and taper stops.
In the right-hand chamber, the exposed summer tie beam is unchamfered. There is vertical sheathing with a deep feather edge on the fireplace wall in the chamber. The same deep-feather-edged sheathing is found below the soffit of the staircase in the lobby. Roof framing is of principal rafters and common purlins. The cellar under just the right-hand . room retains a possibly original pucheon staircase. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The Adams-Clark house retains a modest three run Second Period staircase with closed stringer and in the left-hand room, a fireplace wall of raised-field paneling with late Second Period mantelpiece. The wing to the right side has a delicate Federal staircase and other trim of c. 1800. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house was probably built by Isaac Adams shortly after he purchased the property in 1716.
In the late 18th century, Captain Benjamin 'Adams, a Revolutionary War officer who represented Rowley in the General Court between 1778 and 1780 lived in the house.
