SIGNIFICANCE The Harraden House has integrity of location, design, setting, and judging from the photos taken during restoration and the framing in the attic, of materials and workmanship in its First Period Frame. The building therefore meets criterion C. Since opening up the walls to expose the framing would certainly yield information about the nature of First Period framing practices in Gloucester, the building also qualifies under Criterion D. The structure provides evidence of the evolutionary growth of buildings which began as single cell houses and were later expanded, a fate common to many buildings in the study area. The evidence of joined to the original structure is especially intact in this case. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Harraden House is a seven bay wide, one room deep structure with steeply pitched roof and added lean-to.
The building originally consisted of a single cell house, perhaps built c. 1660, now located in the second through fourth bays from the left (west) end. Before 1765, the right hand rooms and lean-to had been added. At some point end was extended by one bay and portions of the lean-to raised. by simple trim, an early 19th century frontispiece and a central chimney. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Except in the attic, no First Period framing is exposed in the house. However, a photgraph of the original left end girt taken during restoration of the house in the mid-20th century reveals beam and stud mortises for an outside wall, a broad quarter round chamfer, and what appears to be a lamb's tongue stop at the junction of the girt These features are consistent with the traditional c. 1660 construction date of the house (see photo).

Evidence that the second to fourth bays of the house incorporate the original single cell structure is based on the photograph of the end girt and the presence in the attic of an obvious exterior corner at the junction of the rear right chimney tie beam and rafter (see photo). Also, there is a difference in floor height between the two sides of the structure, the left hand rooms being a step higher than the right, and the summer beams run in different directions.

In the left hand chamber, there is also a longitudinal In the right hand chamber, summer and summer tie beam LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The downstairs rooms retain well-executed Second Period raised-field paneling. That in the right hand room was found in the cellar, having been used to construct a coal bin, and was replaced on the fireplace wall c. 1950. It is flanked by pilasters, also thought to be part of the original assemblage of the wall.
Simple raised field paneling lines the fireplace wall of the right hand chamber, while the left hand chamber incorporates a Federal Period mantelpiece on plain board dado. The 5 1/2' wide bay was added to the right hand end in the 18th century (judging by the character of the joists shown in the photo taken during repairs). The right end wall was then constructed with plank framing, rather than studs. The left hand bay, 6 1/2 feet wide, may well have masonry walls. Its walls are 14" thick. When the lean-to was added to the rear, a second set of longer rear rafters was laid on top of the original rafters in the attic. In the mid-20th century, the left hand room, the added left end bay, and the lean-to on that side were thrown together to make a large living room. Bolection molding was added to the fireplace at that time.
