SIGNIFICANCE The Herrick House retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship in its First Period frame and surviving original finish. The building, therefore, meets criterion C.
Although a title search has not been carried out on the property, the Proctor and Bray families are traditionally associated with the site. During replacement of the original central chimney in 1910, a workman found a brick dated 1672. Should deed research corroborate 1672 as the construction date, and should further physical examination reveal that the lean-to of the original section was integral as is suspected, the house would take on added significance. The structure would then predate by 11 years the earliest known integral lean-to in New England. The segmentally arched door head in the original rear wall of the left hand room is a rare surviving example of decorative First Period carpentry work. Segmentally arched doors are known in only one two other examples in the study area.
EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Herrick House is 2 1/2 stories in height, 5 bays wide and one room deep with a lean-to. The house began as a single cell structure consisting of the left hand rooms and chimney bay. Whether the lean-to was integral to that structure cannot be determined without further removal of finishes. The right hand file of rooms was added in the 18th century. A full dormer in the lean-to and a small rear shed are products of the early 20th century remodeling of the -house for use as a hospital. The roof, of moderately steep pitch, is pierced by one narrow central chimney, an early 20th century replacement of the original chimney. A plain doorway and simply framed sash windows mark the exterior of this shingled house. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features are seen in the left hand rooms and attic.
In the left hand room, the longitudinal summer beam, the only framing member exposed, has 1 3/4" wide quarter-round chamfers, flat collars and concave taper stops. The room also retains at least one wall of original clay plaster, heavily whitewashed, in which an original arched doorway has recently been uncovered (see photo). In the left hand chamber, the summer tie beam has 1 1/2" wide flat chamfers and crude lamb's tongue stops. Joist spacing in the floor a relatively narrow 20 inches on center.
In the attic, where only an occasional framing member is visible, there is evidence of a purlin roof with broad, flat, hewn purlins. A dovetail jointed collar beam was present in at least one set of original rafters. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Finishes have recently been removed from the right hand chamber in the portion of the house added in the 18th century. There is clear evidence that the unchamfered summer tie beam was exposed and whitewashed for a time before being boxed, while the rest of the ceiling was plastered from the beginning. Current renovations have also allowed examination of the interesting method of joining the 17th and 18th century portions of the house at the rear plate. The newer plate laps under the original end tie beam inside of the original corner post, and is supported by its own post.
This creats a strong junction, but means that the plates of the old and the new portions of the house are not aligned.
