SIGNIFICANCE: The George Hopkinson House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its First-Period plank frame and single-cell facade under criterion C. The house's retention of its original single-cell front facade makes it an extremely rare example of a First-Period house once common but now almost vanished in Massa- chusetts.
The plank frame, which is an uncommon alternative in Mas- sachusetts Bay, appears also in Groveland in the Joseph Hardy House; its use in this town is deserving of further study under criterion D. Removal of the present boxing and finish may reveal information important to our understanding of late First-Period plank framing and decoration under criterion D. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION: The George Hopkinson House is a single-cell, two-and-a-half story house originally one-bay deep, but now two rooms deep with door and- chimney in the right of three bays. The First-Period single-cell structure received a lean-to and long, narrow, one-and-a-half story gabled ell on the right of the lean-to during the second period. The lean-to was raised to two-and-a-half stories, the chimney remodelled, and the roof replaced during the Federal period.
The door and win- dows on the main facade have Federal surrounds with splayed lintels. The thin, remodeled chimney stack protrudes through the front slope of the present roof. MAJOR FIRST-PERIOD FEATURES Most of the original plank frame is covered with later boxing, but enough evidence exists to suggest that the First-Period single-cell structure remains fairly intact beneath the later finish. nca The origi- nal hall and chamber above measure both 17'6" square to the left of the chimney. and other framing members are all boxed with plastered walls and ceilings. The only visible First-Period finish is in a second-floor rear closet, where the summer beam at its juncture with the rear plate is exposed and exhibits flat chamfers with raised cove stops.
The evidence for plank-frame construction exists in the present rear kitchen, where the original rear girt is exposed revealing mortises in its underside to receive the tenons of 2" thick planks. confirms the owner's assertion that during a 1981 re-sheathing of the louse he saw 2" planks on the front and side walls. He also saw a in the upper northwest corner, typical of plank frames.
