SIGNIFICANCE The Emeline Patch House has integrity of workmanship, design and materials in its First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C. frame is representative of carpentry practices at the very end of the First Period. Further examination of the concealed parts of the frame would be likely to yield important information about joinery in transitional buildings.
(Criterion EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Emeline Patch House is a 5 bay wide, 2 1/2 story, 2 room deep structure with a small wing to the right-hand side. The front (north) rooms conprise the original double cell house. Sometime during the 18th century another file of rooms was added to the rear and the roof rebuilt with ridge on the central axis. The house was moved back from the road in the late 1940's. The clapboarded exterior is characterized by simple Second Period Vernacular window trim and a Greek Revival doorway. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The late First Period Frame of this house is visible only in the right-hand front room and lobby. right-hand room has flat chamfers and tapered stops, while the chimney girt and post are unchamfered. ane taperea stope, wnite tse of the Rafters of the original principal rafter, common purlin roof are still in place on the front slope of the roof.
When the roof was raised, new timbers were pieced between original rafters and the ridge. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The house retains many well executed Second Period finishes, including fireplace walls of raised-field paneling in the left- and right-hand rooms.
