SIGNIFICANCE The Austin Brown House retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in its late First Period frame, which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C. The structure, representative of a larger group of late First Period buildings, adds to our knowledge of framing practices among Hamilton joiners. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Austin Brown House is a 5 bay wide two room deep house, 2 1/2 stories in height with wings to the right and left. The house began as a double cell house. A lean-to was added in the 18th century. A photograph taken in 1898 shows the house clapboarded, with a two story lean-to and ell to the left. The ell to the right was added by 1907. In 1915, the house was again enlarged and stuccoed to create a Colonial Revival style country estate.
At that time a new higher roof with ridge on the central axis and three dormer windows was built and porches were added to the left wings. There is a one story porch across the facade. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features, in the form of an exposed decorated oak frame, are visible in the left-hand room and in the right-hand and left-hand chambers. In the left-hand room, the 12 inch wide longitudinal the in exposed, decor and summer beam has flat chamfers and tapered stops. In the right-hand and left-hand chambers, the 9 inch wide summer tie beams have flat chamfers and taper stops. Posts are deeply jowled, but unchamfered. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The left-hand room is decorated with a fireplace wall of Second 'eriod raised-field paneling in which there is an oven door to the .eft of the firebox, an elaborately molded mantel shelf and a long ivermantel panel.
