SIGNIFICANCE The Woodberry-Quarrels House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C.
The plank frame construction is representative of a larger group of First Period Houses in Northern Essex County and the structure embodies the distinctive framing characteristics of that sub-group of First Period buildings. The enlargement of the house within the First Period by the addition of a second cell provides another example of the evolutionary growth many single cell First Period structures experienced. The retention of the First Period floor plan despite the Federal remodeling replacing one central chimney stack with paired ones represents a late conservative survival of First Period planning concepts in a building only superficially altered to conform to later standards. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Woodberry-Quarrels House is seven bays long and 2 1/2 stories high. The original single cell plan house survives as the entry bay and the room and chamber to the right.
The left-hand rooms were added in the First Period and subsequent additions were made to the right, left and rear at unknown dates. The clapboarded structure has irregularly spaced sash windows, a one story entrance porch and two rear chimneys. The surroundings of the Woodberry-Quarrels house, with meadow and wetlands, are characteristic of the property's early setting. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features are visible in the downstairs front rooms and in the left-hand chamber. In the original cell of the house, the right-hand room displays an ample longitudinal summer beam with wide guarter-round chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. Joists 20 inches on centers are set into butt cogs in the summer beam, but rest on top of the front and rear girts. These girts and the chimney girt are flat chamfered. Circa 1980, a two story wing room was created by gutting the two bay 19th c.
addition to the right of the original house. The original end wall of the right-hand room including first floor end girt, was completely removed to open up the room to the new living The outer end of the summer beam now rests on an added post. The corner posts and rising braces are framed into the center of the tie beam. The overhanging portion of the tie beam has a two inch wide rabbet to receive vertical planks.
Iwo mortises on the inner edge of the tie beam near the middle suggest the original window placement. The original window was rather wide, perhaps a three part window. In the left-hand room, part of the cell added to the house in the First Period there is an exposed transverse summer beam of smaller dimensions than its counterpart in the earlier side of the house. The summer beam has flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. Second floor framing is concealed except for summer tie beams and one corner post. Evidence of decorative embellishment of the tie beams has been obliterated. The lower several inches of the beams were for greater head room. The post, however, has a narrow flat chamfer. In the attic, portions of the framing visible indicate a principal rafter/common purlin roof with collar beams only in the older side of the house.
LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The house was updated in the Federal period, probably losing its central chimney at that time. Fireplaces in the rear of the dowristairs rooms have Federal trim, as does the small three-run staircase in the entry bay.
