SIGNIFICANCE The Hastings-Morse House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its First Period frame which embodies distintive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C.
In its single cell plan and decorated frame, it is representative of a larger number of First Period houses, and our knowledge of First Period framing practices in the Haverhill EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Hastings-Morse House 2 1/2 story, 5 bay wide structure with partial rear lean-to and a 20th century enclosed sun porch on the left (west) end. The building probably began as a single cell structure composed of the right-hand rooms and chimney bay to which the left-hand rooms were added in the 18th c. The house was restored in 1957, at which time the rear wall of the lean-to was extended out four feet ard the lean-to roof raised. The exterior is characterized by a one story entrance porch (c. 1960), sash windows with simple enframements and a central chimney. The buildings secluded location amid open fields overlooking the Merrimack River adds to its character as a historic house.
MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features are visible only in the right-hand room, where there is a 14 inch wide by 10 inch deep longitudinal summer beam with flat chamfers. beam has butt cogs for joists spaced 20 1/2 to 21 1/2 inches on Most of the cogs are filled with joists, but at the fireplace end of the summer beam, the last two joists are spaced further apart, and framed into their own cogs, while the empty cogs which continue the 20 to 21 inch spacing on either side of the summer beam are filled in with bricks to conceal their presence. evidence suggests that either the summer beam was reused from an earlier building, or that joist spacing toward the fireplace end was altered for some reason during construction. About half of the joists are slightly chamfered and hence probably reused.
When restoring the house, the rear half of the fireplace in the right-hand room was rebuilt, but most of the rest of the chimney stack is original. The fireplace opening is 4 feet, 10 inches high by 8 feet, 1 1/2 inches long. The opening of the original oven is on an angle at the left rear, (south) corner. A scarf joint with blades splayed vertically is found in the front plate near the left chimney post in the second floor stair hall.
Roof framing consists of principal rafters and common purlins. Some of the rafters are reused and have mortises for large lapped collar beams. The entire roof, however, may date from the period of the addition of the left-hand rooms. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The left-hand first floor room retains well-executed Second Period finishes including a fireplace wall fine corner cupboard with cable fluted pilasters. Vertical feather-edged paneling on the fireplace wall in the left-hand room was moved in 1957 from other unspecified locations in the house. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house is thought to have been built in 1706 by the son of the owner of The Hastings Tavern in Haverhill and is mentioned in town records in 1710.
