SIGNIFICANCE The house on Labor-in-Vain Road retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship and setting in its late First Period frame, and transitional finish which embody distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C.

The combination of a chamfered frame with early Second Period style turned balusters on the staircase provides insight into the gradual process of assimilation of Second Period style, Renaissance-inspired decorative features by rural craftsmen. When studied in comparison to the Smith House nearby at 142 Argilla Road (also surveyed) of similar date and with nearly identical staircase trim, this house is likely to yield important information about. carpenty practices in Ipswich in the transitional period; thus it is eligible for Criterion D, as well. The decoration of the chimney post with a stop at the floor end of the chamfer as well as at the ceiling end is a rare variant of frame embellishment noted in only 3 or 4 buildings in the survey area.

EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The main body of the "Belosellski" House on Labor-in-Vain Road is 5 bays wide, one room deep and 2 1/2 stories high with a rear lean-to which may be integral. The house was extended by an ell to the left rear c. 1810 and by a full lean-to dormer in the late 19th or early 20th century. A second ell of 2 stories and a screened porch were added to the rear, very likely in conjunction with use of the building in the 20th century as the club house for the Labor-in-Vain country club. The clapboarded exterior has simple late Second Period Vernacular trim. Symmetrically placed sash windows have molded enframements. The central doorway has pilasters and an entablature with broad frieze. A central chimney pierces the roof. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features, in the form of an exposed, decorated frame, are in the right-hand room and chamber.

In the right-hand room, the longitudinal summer beam, the chimney girt, the front (south east) corner post and the chimney posts have inch-wide flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The chimney post has the added embellishment of a taper stop near the floor. An interesting, possibly original feature of this room is the open grill work transom above the door to the lobby. Square dowels set on a diagonal form the grill. -1- Staple to Inventory form at bottom INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Office of the Secretary, Boston Commmity : IPSWICH Form No: 31 Property Name: Belosellski House Labor-in-Vain House Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. In the right-hand chamber, all the framing is exposed and has inch-wide flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops.

Rising braces are exposed in the rear wall of this room, but whether their presence indicates plank frame construction is unknown. In the lobby the staircase is embellished with a handrail molded on both sides and with possibly original turned balusters, of early Second Period style profile. The balusters are similar in profile to those found in the Smith house nearby at 142 Argilla Road. In the attic, a principal rafter/common purlin roof made with oak timbers is visible. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The house retains Second Period trim on the fireplace walls in the right-hand room and left-hand chamber, including panelled cupboard doors in the downstairs room and raised-field panelling and a bold bolection-molded fireplace surround in the upstairs room. Trim in the Federal style including mantel pieces is found in the right-hand chamber and the c. 1810 wing to the left.

Following a frequent pattern in early 20th century restorations, the right-hand room in this house was thrown open to the lean-to to form a larger living room. New finishes in the lean-to part of the room drew upon historic features of the house:| a bolection molding at the fireplace, small overmantel panels and boxed beams finished flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. BOUNDARY DISCRIPTION The House on Labor-in -Vain Road is situated near the middle óf the nearly 600 acre estate. It is separated from other buildings on the estate visually and physically. The line of convenience drawn around the house follows the gravel road that passes the house on the south and west sides. The 150' square includes the house, surrounding garden and yard and a small fence defining the space immediately around the house.
