SIGNIFICANCE The Smith House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its retention of transitional features characteristic of late First Period houses, making it eligible for National Register inclusion under Criterion C.
Its rural location and largely unaltered interior give it integrity of setting and feeling. The presence of both chamfered and boxed framing members reveal the patterns of transition from First to Second Period building styles and thus may yield information important to social and architectural history under Criterion D. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Smith House is a 2 1/2 story integral lean-to house with a central chimney plan and a symmetrical 5-bay front facade. The central front door is embellished with a small one story gabled Greek Revival portico. Early 20th century wings project from the left and rear of the house. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The combination of chamfered and boxed structural elements in the first floor rooms indicates the transitional nature of this house.
The first floor left hand room has a longitudinal summer beam with beveled chamfer and very small lamb's tongue stops. The front plate and chimney girt are boxed with quirk beading, while the corner posts and end girt are exposed. The plaster ceiling and Second Period fireplace wall paneling are Second Period features; the 57" wide fireplace is a transitional element. The right hand first floor room also has a longitudinal summer beam with beveled chamfer and small lamb's tongue stops. All other framing members are boxed. The fireplace is similar to that in the left room. The lean-to room has a chamfered rear plate with simple stops to either side of the studs. One shouldered post (NW corner) is partially exposed. The parge cooking fireplace originally had 2 rear ovens, but one has been removed.
The plaster ceiling covers all but the lower faces of the 6 ceiling beams, which seem to be unfinished. The framing members cf the second floor rooms are entirely boxed lexcept for crudely shouldered corner posts in the lef: chamber), with evidence that they were never finished or exposed. Tris combination of boxed elements on the seconá floor with chamfered and exposed beams on the first floor may be a typical pattern in transitiónal houses. The attic reveals a 5 bay principal rafter oak roof with butt cog purlins and ridge pole.
Both gables retain possibly 18th century plaster between the studs, as is evinced by the rosehead nails in the vertical lathe. SIGNIFICANT LATER FEATURES Both first floor fireplace walls exhibit simple Second Period raised field paneling The Second Period central stairway has plain square newel posts and turned balusters set into the stringer.
