SIGNIFICANCE The Harris Farm House retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in its late First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction under Criterion The decoration of the frame in only the more formal rooms of the a larger number of late First Period The three-bay plan represents the rare survival of an atypical plan from the late First Period, and the paired transverse summer beams are an illustration of a regional characteristic of the Salem area. The six foot length of the cantilever of the tie beam of the original lean-to is a manifestation of integral lean-to framing of an extreme form. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Harris Farm House is three bays wide, 1 1/2 stories high, and two rooms deep. There is a wing to the left rear composed of 19th century sheds converted to living space in the 1950's.
On the right side is a recent screened porch. Originally, the house was one room deep with an integral lean-to. The roof was raised, and rebuilt with the ridge on the center axis in the eighteenth century. Window trim on the clapboarded exterior is Federal vernacular in style, while the doorway is a recent replacement in a Colonial style. A single chimney is on the center left of the ridge. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features in the form of an exposed, quirk-beaded frame are seen in the front rooms and lobby of this unusual 4-bay-plan house. There are paired transverse summer beams in the south room, supported by story posts at the south wall. Quirk beading is found on the easternmost post and beam, but only on the east side of the westernmost beam and not at all on the post supporting it.
(The absence of quirked beading on certain of the framing members might indicate presence of a chimney in the end bay originally, or might have been arbitrary.) and beams in the lobby upstairs hall and south chamber, where exposed, are quirk-beaded. In the rear room of and posts are exposed, but plainly of the original roof remaining in the initially the house had a principal rafter/common purlin roof with integral lean-to. When the roof was raised, the intermediate refters of the lean-to were turned over and in the new roof. Apparently in the original framing system, rafters of the integral lean-to were borne on tie beams cantilevered out six feet from supporting posts.

LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The house retains simple trim of the Federal Period, including two mantelpieces with broad friezes. HISTORICAL INFORMATION While the property on which the house sits was owned by the Harris Family by 1667, the house, on the basis of style, seems to have been constructed c. 1720 - 1730.
