SIGNIFICANCE The Abraham Adams House retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, association and feeling. With its steeply, (50-degree,) pitched gable roof, chamfered oak roof frame, exposed and simply decorated interior framing, the house embodies several patterns of form and construction, making it eligible under Criterion C. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Adams House, in the Byfield section of Newbury, has evolved into an I-shaped floor plan, with the original double cell, central chimney, two story, 5 bay house in front.
Behind it is a later and lower one story gabled ell partly raised to two stories, with its own end chimney. At right angles to the ell is a modern one story addition with gabled roof that projects beyond the ell. The First Period house is one room deep with single centered windows at each story on the ends, and has a projecting lobby entrance with a later door and Federal sidelights. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The original double-cell five-bay house has its all-oak framing fully exposed in three of the four rooms. Both rooms on each floor are 19'6" x 14'6" , with 11"-wide summers running longitudinally on the first floor. Both are decorated with flat chamfers and 3"-long lamb's tongue stops. Joists are 19.5" on centers in the east room, 21" on centers in the west room.
The fireplace opeing in the west room has been reduced, but the cove to the original opening can be seen in the adjoining closet. The west chamber has no fireplace, but its 11"-wide summer tie is exposed, and has similar flat chamfers and lamb's tongues to those on the first floor. The east chamber has Second-Period paneling and a plastered ceiling. Its original fireplace, however, can still be seen. It has a 6'4" high opening, smoke panel, and rounded and plastered jamb. Bridled scarfs in the rear plate behind the chimney and in the upper front hall prove the house to be of one build. The attic is framed of oak, in a five-bay, principal rafter and purlin system with collars. The entire roof frame is chamfered. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The two rooms of the rear ell have rear corner fireplaces with Second Period overmantel panels; the east chamber remodeling is also of this style.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house was built on empty land acquired between 1705 and 1707 by Abraham Adams, (1676-1758,) who married Samuel Sewall's granddaughter in Capt. Adams, a captain and noted early Massachusetts shipbuilder, was also a successful farmer, and the third highest taxpayer in Byfield. Until a new subdivision was built on part of the farm, the property was surrounded by hay fields, from which it derived its former name of "High Fields."
