SIGNIFICANCE The Noyes House has integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, and association.
In its decorated First Period frame and extremely early type of roof framing, it embodies distinctive characteristics of First Period architecture which meet Criterion C. Later significant changes hide important structural information which might help date the house more closely, and therefore meets Criterion D. The Coffin House roof, to which the Noyes roof framing is directly related, Cummings has suggested as among the earliest principal rafter roofs adapted to New England roof . boarding by the trenching of purlins to support vertical boards. He suggests a possible Wiltshire, or West Country origin for this American framing method in the English prototype of cruck roof framing The quality of finish of the roof, with small chamfers on its members like that of the Coffin House, is highly unusual and an important survival of seventeenth' century craftsmanship.
The filled chamfer and stop on the one exposed tie beam is a unique example of this type within this thematic survey. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The large, central chimney, lobby entrance, double cell, 5-bay house was originally one room deep. Io this core of "undetermined seventeenth century date" was added about 1800 a two story ell at right angles to the southwest corner. A brick chimney stack is located at the west end. At a later date a lower ell of one and one-half stories was added to the gable wall of the early nineteenth century ell. In the early 20th century a room was added behind the main house first ell, covered by a simple shed roof. Io the south, a small gabled porch has been added to the gable end and one of its windows enlarged for a side door. Across the length of the 1800 ell an arbor hides the introduction of modern multipaned windows between earlier fenestration.
Dormers in the north and south slopes of the 1800 ell roof were added after 1924, about the time the central chimney was partly rebuilt. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Cummings gives this house an undetermined, but clearly seventeenth century, date based on the combination of conflicting typological evidence. Ihe chamfered roof frame is mid-seventeenth century in character and directly related to that of the nearby Coffin House in Newbury (c.1654). The Noyes roof is of oak in a principal and purlin system with three purlins and ridge purlin; the purlins are trenched into the rafters.

Also in the attic, seen from the c.1800 ell, are early shingles which covered the rear wall before the addition was made. While most of the house frame is covered by later boxing, the second floor south chamber oak tie beam is exposed beneath the plaster ceiling. It is 12" wide with a quarter-round chamfer with fillet terminating in a 3" lamb's tongue stop. Cummings measured the joist spacing and determined that they suggest a date later in the seventeenth century. In the front hall, the oak chimney girt is exposed to its 13" height.
Large oak lintels can be seen in the closets next to the fireplaces on the ground floor, although the chimney is said to have been rebuilt in the 1920s above the brick arched foundation. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The north and south first floor rooms were completely remodeled in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, perhaps when the rear ell was added to the house. The rooms have good Federal trim, fireplace surrounds and doors. Surviving shingles in the attic may also be 18th century.
