SIGNIFICANCE The Benjamin Coker House, despite several changes, and a relocation in 1856, retains integrity of design, workmanship, and association. It embodies, in its roof frame and second story tie beam, clear evidence of a distinctive First Period plan type and construction methods, to meet Criterion C. While the house is undocumented before 1719, the style and construction suggest a ca. 1700 date.
EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The house is a five-bay, central chimney, projecting lobby entry, two story house with a large two story ell added to the northwest corner, which partially projects south of the thtory gable wall and its 1-story porch. Having been moved, the present central chimney and that along the far wall of the ell are of 19th century date. Behind and to the rear of the east room a one story gabled ell has been added. The house began as a single cell, two story house, located at High and Federal Streets. It was. enlarged with a small parlor and chamber on the opposite side of the chimney in the mid-18th century; the rear ell appears to be of mid-19th century date. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The early core of this house is the chimney bay and left-hand rooms.
This side has rooms measuring 19 x 18.5', and roof framing that includes mortises for collar beams, (now gone,) in the principal rafters of the principal and purlin system roof. In the first story room, the 12"-wide summer beam has been cut back, and the chamfer and stops are missing. However, in the chamber above, the tie beam is decorated with a 2"-wide beveled chamfer terminating in a large lamb's tongue stop. The posts in this room are exposed and flared, with simple beveled chamfers. SIGNIFICANT LATER FEATURES The earliest second floor room was modernized in the mid-18th century with raised panels and fluted pilasters framing the fireplace opening. 18th-century addition also has Second Period paneling and boxed framing members.
