John Osgood House retains integrity of design, materials, and workmanship in its late First Period/transitional frame, making it eligible under Criterion C.
The double-dove-tailed binding timbers that join the two sections of the house at attic level are extremely unusual solutions to the common Massachusetts problem of how to connect two frame houses. Although the house has been moved, it has only been turned 90 degrees on its original site, essentially leaving it with integrity of location. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Col. John Osgood House is a 2 1/2 story, five bay central chimney clapboarded structure with integral rear lean-to. The left side of the house was originaly a one cell 2 1/2 story building. Another one cell, 2 1/2 story First Period building was attached to the right of the chimney. The present facade has a gabled one story porch entrance and three dormer windows in the roof. A 20th century screened porch projects from the right end of the house; part of the adjoining end of the lean-to has been removed to make a patio.
The house was turned early in the 20th century to face west. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The left side of the house seems to be original to the site, as its frame contains the chimney. Nevertheless, its framing members, including transverse summer beams on both floors, are all boxed. Only the right side of the house now displays late First Period details; thus either both buildings were constructed almost simultaneously and then joined, or the right hand section was built first and added to the newer Second Period house constructed, perhaps, with the addition in mind. The first floor right hand room has an exposed quirk-beaded transverse summer beam supported by story posts. The front plate has a beveled chamfer with taper stops to either side of the story post, and small lamb's tongue stop at the south end.
The rear plate has a beveled chamfer with no stops; the end post is quirk-beaded. Although the chimney is centrally located, the first and second floor plans have long central halls created by running two chimney stacks up the inner walls of the main rooms to arch together in the attic to form the center chimney. As the house was reoriented early in the 20th century, this unusual chimney stack probably dates from modernizations undertaken at that time. is a copy of an old configuration, it would represent an extremely unusual adaptation of First Period exterior aesthetics to Second Period interior planning. The second floor right hand room has a transverse summer beam, flared end posts, story posts, and plates with quirk beading. In the attic, the rafters visibly extend over the integral lean-to. The end tie beams of the two houses are joined together by means of two short double-dove-tailed binding timbers, (see photo,) a very unusual technique for joining houses in Massachusetts Bay. BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION The Col. John Osgood House is situated at the southwest corner of the 10.29 acre parcel, northeast of Osgood Street. A line of convenience to include approximately one acre has been drawn around the house and 19th century barn and includes approximately 200 feet of frontage on Osgood Street.
