SIGNIFICANCE The Carlton-Frie-Tucker House retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship in its First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction under Criterion C.
Its first floor exhibits much evidence of First Period interior detailing and construction; the first floor east room joists with barefaced soffit tenons are exceptional examples of a rare late 17th century construction technique. The structure's present form, a one cell First Period house moved and joined to another one cell or damaged two cell First Period house, may be a rare identifiable example of the fate of many one cell or partially damaged First Period buildings. [1] EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Carlton-Frie-Tucker House is a 2 1/2 story, 5 bay, center chimney plan, clapboarded structure, with a rear lean-to which was rebuilt in the 20th century. The main house consists of two First Period single cell 1/2 houses joined at the center chimney.
The east end is original to the site; the west end was moved from elsewhere and added on in the 1760's, reputedly after a fire destroyed the original west end of the house. A one-story vestibule with gable projects from the center of the main (south) facade. The rear lean-to projects one bay out from the west of the house. A small wing on the northwest corner is connected by a on the northwest covered passageway to a small barn to the east. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Local accounts suggest that the west end of the house was moved in the 1760's, and added to the east end. The two side-by-side chimney posts in the first floor west room support this belief.
The remains of a beehive oven which once opened into the side or rear of a larger fireplace behind the present small one (the oven is visible through a hole punched in the wall of the cellar stairs, which descend from the right side of the fireplace,) suggest that the west end was installed to replace a destroyed room of which the oven was a part. (The existing fireplace is small, and compatible with a 1760's date.) The entire frame of the west room, except for the joists, is exposed. The longitudinal summer beam and the front and rear girts have flat chamfers with lamb's tongue stops with pronounced diamond pips. All corner posts are jowled. The end and chimney girts have no chamfers, and thus may be 1760's replacements. The east end of the house is reputedly original to the site. Most of the frame in the first floor east room is exposed.
The partially hacked out longitudinal summer beam exhibits surviving lamb's tongue stops. The 78 the summer beam They are 23 1/2" apart on center, and have flat-chamfered edges. Discontinuities in the band courses indicate that the late 18th century fireplace and oven now in place were built over a larger, original fireplace opening in the original chimney stack. The wood mantel beam is visible five courses of brick above the present opening. The lobby, although completely altered, has a large jowled post on the east side.
The second floor stairhall is also altered, but the outline plaster of the chimney stack. The attic floor retains the top winder of a narrow staircase which the previous owner states once wound around the chimney to emerge to the right of the east room fireplace. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The granite foundation step to the vestibule is said to be one of the steps from the entrance of the 1866 MIT Rogers Building on Boylston Street. The step was moved here, upon the demolition of the Rogers Building, by Charles w. Tucker, an MIT graduate and owner of the house. [2] The northeast ell is reputed to be an 18th century shoe shop, moved here from elsewhere on the property. [3] HISTORICAL INFORMATION The east end of the house was probably built by the land's original owner, Ebenezer Frie (Frye) III, a town proprietor from 1713 on, after his marriage to Elizabeth Farnum in 1708.
An increase in taxes in 1710 suggests a 1709 construction date, compatible with the stylistic evidence of the house. The house remained in the Frye or Carlton families until 1813. Around the time that James IV took title to the house in 1768, the building was enlarged by adding another old house to its west end. Carlton and Tucker family tradition state that this addition was the 1610 John Carlton garrison house, originally located on the west side of Clay Pit Hill. [4] No stylistic or documentary evidence has been found to verify this claim, however. Contradictory traditions claim that either the addition or the original core had to be deepened to fit the two together; [5] the ca. 1760's unfinished chimney and end girts in the west side may be the result of such a size adjustment. After 1813, the house passed into the Tucker Family. Charles W.
Tucker (1870-1948) wrote a history of the house and brought one of the granite stairs from the demolished MIT building to become the foundation stone to the house entrance. The stairs at the Rogers Building were once the traditional "roost' of MIT undergraduates. Tucker issued a standing invitation to "all sons of the old MIT...to come to North Andover if they want to stand on the Rogers steps again".
