SIGNIFICANCE The Proctor House retains integrity of location, materials, and workmanship in the survival of its late First Period frame under criterion C. Its present floor plan is representative of the growth patterns of early houses, with additions made during the First and Second Periods as the occupants' needs increased.
Because of the amount of hidden frame elements in what is probably the oldest part of the house, the west first story front room, future study is likely to yield further significant information about its construction, thus qualifying it under Criterion D, as well. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Proctor House is a five bay, 2 1/2 story shingled structure two cells An 18th century two story wing wraps around the right rear corner, and has a gabled roof perpendicular to the main ridge. A tall central chimney pierces the front slope of the roof. A second tall, thin chimney projects from the rear gable-end of the wing. A one story late 19th century porch wraps around the main facade from the central projecting lobby entrance east until it meets the rear wing. The house probaly evolved from a single cell structure (now the front west room), to which the east room was added during the First Period.
The rear additions probably date to the 18th century. There is a semi-attached 20th century garage on the west side. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Although similar late First Period features appear in both front rooms, a brick addition to the east side of the chimney seems to indicate that the west end may be slightly earlier. The first floor west room retains the only unrestored fireplace in the house, with a large unfinished lintel and a narrow smoke panel in the rear. hidden. All other details of this room are The east first floor room has a longitudinal summer beam with beveled chamfer and almost triangular lamb's tongue stops. The original rear girt (now between the front and back rooms) has a similar chamfer and stops, and exhibits empty stud mortises from an original rear wall. The second floor west room has a transverse summer beam with beveled chamfers.
The original chimney stack, with additions to the east and rear, is visible in the attic. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The house has a long association with the Proctor family, residents in the area since 1648. The building is traditionally dated to the 1650's, when John Proctor, who was hung during the Salem witch trials in 1692, rented the property from Emmanuel Downing.
Nevertheless, the characteristically late chamfers and stops suggest that the present structure was built by Thorndike Proctor, John's son, when he bought the property from Charles Downing ca. 1700. The house remained in the Proctor family until 1851, when it was bought by the Roome family.
