SIGNIFICANCE The Samuel Gott House retains integrity of design, location, workmanship, feeling and association. In its plank frame, original single-cell plan, and continued use of the exposed and decorated summer or tie beam it aa ea l corade rue a eos embodies distinctive characteristics of First Period construction that meet Criterion C.
Its roofing however suggests a Second Period date, which places the house among the smaller number of transitional First Haoa anong cheanaller Period to Second Period houses of some undetermined date between 1702 and c. 1730. Its plank frame and 23" joist spacing reinforce a possible date in the first quarter of the eighteenth century, despite the undecorated character of other framing members. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Gott House is a gambrel roofed cottage and is constructed with plank walls. The original part on the east is three bays wide and two rooms deep with the front room larger than the rear room. A two bay, one room deep addition was added to the west in the mid 18th century. Being narrower, the addition lacks the rear slope of the gambrel roof. The lobby and chimney are in the center bay flanking the front rooms.
The shingled exterior has Second Period vernacular style trim in the form of multi-paned sash windows and a simple doorway. There are 2 dormer windows in the front slope of the roof. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES Exposed framing is visible throughout the original, eastern-most 3 bays. The transverse summer beam in the right-hand room has flat chamfers 1 1/4 inches wide and lamb's tongue stops at the partition wall, but not at the front wall. The continuation of the summer beam in the rear room is flat chamfered. Other beams exposed in the rear room have narrow flat chamfers. In the rear room also, consistent with the plank wall construction, braces are exposed on the west wall. In the lobby, the original end girt is rabbetted to receive planks, but planks have been removed to allow access to the added west room.
Upstairs, framing of the gambrel roof consists of rafters for the upper and lower roof slopes, struts between lower rafter and tie beam, purlings and cross beams at the junction of the upper and lower rafters. below the cross beams, finishes living space, retains early plaster and lath. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The added west room retains fine Second Period finish: raised field paneling on the fireplace wall, raised-field paneled dado on the rear wall and a corner cupboard with arched, paneled door.
