SIGNIFICANCE The Lambert House retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in the First Period frame of the right-hand rooms which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction under Criterion C. The decoration and oak wood of the frame are representative of First Period frames at the turn of the 18th century.
There is no way to be certain of the construction date of the left-hand rooms and chimney bay, without examining the frame in those areas, but the fact that joist spacing in the left-hand room is a conservative 17 1/2 inches on centers as opposed to 19 1/2 inches on centers in the right-hand room suggests a contemporary, if not earlier frame. The presence of a cellar under just the left-hand room might also suggest that that side of the house was the original single cell structure. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Lambert House is a five bay wide, 2 1/2 story, two room deep structure with additions to the rear and both sides. It is impossible to tell whether the house began as a single or double cell structure from visible evidence for the frame is completely boxed on the left-hand side. Some time in the 18th century rear rooms possibly in the form of a lean-to were added to the house.
By the mid 19th century, the house had become a full two room deep, two story house covered by a raised roof with ridge on the center axis. The clapboarded exterior has symmetrically placed sash windows and a mid 19th century entrance porch. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First period framing is visible only in the right hand front room and chamber, but several pieces of evidence described below suggest that the left hand rooms were built at the same time or even earlier. In the right-hand room, 19 feet square, there is an exposed longitudinal oak summer beam 13 1/2 inches wide with 1 1/2 inch wide flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops at the fireplace wall. Joist spacing is 19 1/2 inches on centers. The fireplace wall has been partly opened up to reveal the remains of a fireplace lintel 4 1/2 feet above the floor.
In the right-hand chamber, the oak summer tie beam has flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. Vertical feather edged sheathing trims the fireplace wall south of the fireplace. The chimney bay is an ample 8' 3" wide, while the left-hand room is, like the right-hand room, 19 feet square. The longitudinal summer beam there has a 14 1/2 inch wide box so that the beam underneath must be comparable in size to the summer beam in the right-hand room. Roof framing was entirely replaced when the new, broader roof was constructed.
The chimney was rebuilt angling back from the attic floor to exit at the ridge of the roof. There is a cellar under just the left hand front room and the rear rooms of the house. The chimney foundation is a broad brick arch. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The house retains a fine early Second Period staircase with turned balusters and drops. The left-hand room and chamber exhibit carefully crafted cornice moldings with cyma profile and similar crown moldings along the boxed beams. Both rooms have mantelpieces in the Greek Revival style. A niche north of the fireplace in the right-hand room is surmounted by a relief which looks like the death's head of an early gravestone. The feature probably dates from the early 20th century restoration of the house.
If further investigation should determine that the death's head is part of the original chimney construction, the feature would be a highly significant use of First Period religious imagery. A 19th century barn is attached to the left wing of the house. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The Lambert house was built by Thomas Lambert, Jr., who took his bride there in 1699. The house remained in the hands of the Lambert family until 1977. Mrs. Chiney Lambert, owner in the early 20th century, was instrumental in the purchase and restoration of the Platts Bradstreet house by the Rowley Historical Society.
