SIGNIFICANCE The core of the so-called Humphreys, or Burrill, House may be an early 18th century single cell house, probably built with a rear leanto, of unusually large scale and proportions.
While most of the interior is boxed and sheathed with later 18th century finish work, the house contains a First Period frame of quality craftsmanship which with its notable exterior jetties and unusually large proportions meets Criterion C, and shows evi- dence that further study would yield important information to the study of Massachusetts First Period buildings, (Criterion D.) Although moved, it Yings (Cortant internatson and shome) retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling and asso- ciation. The use of a single transverse summer beam at the first story, with two transverse ties at the second, is unique. Those on the first Iloor must relate to the framed overhang or jetty, extending to support it as do the end and chimney girts. partially unboxed rear corner post, these features are the only visible evidence of First Period construction.
The probable plan of the first phase of building, a single cell of large proportions with added (?) leanto is important plan information, although the idea that the house contains two older frames must also be yield greater information both about the plan and the construction of this unusual dwelling. i5 2a10% boen 2det die Ban and tae Con d, n a EXTERIOR - DESCRIPTION The Burrill House is a 5-bay, 2 1/2-story, central-chimney house with added leanto, framed overhanging second story on the front facade, and possibly hewn jetties at the second and story of one end wall. The rebuilt attic supports two added dormer windows in the front plane of the roof, and a skylight in the rear slope of the later integral leanto roof. A partial- ly rebuilt brick chimney protrudes from the roof in front of the ridge.
MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The earliest core of the house appears to be that to the left of the front entry. The main room on the first floor is 19' x 19', that on the second is 19' x 20' due to the framed overhang on the facade. The frame is unu- sual in that the first floor summer is transverse, supported in the rear by two-story post between the rear corner posts. On the second floor, the attic is supported by two transverse summer ties, which form a chord with the principal rafters of the roof, consistent with similar Salem-area double summers. While all the posts and summers are boxed, the second- story posts are shouldered, and one is exposed in the rear closet or modern hallway leading from the chimney bay.
Also in the second floor left room, the plaster has been partially removed to show the original square-brick nogging as well as a falling windbrace at the exterior rear corner. evidence for a similar brace exists at the opposite rear corner, it is not clear if this means the original chimney bay adjoined this location or not. The chimney bay and main entrance, which contains a closed string triple- run staircase with turned balusters of the first quarter of the 18th cen- a batanters tury, separates the major rooms.
Those on the right side measure 15' wide by 16 1/2' on the first floor, and nearly 17 1/2' on the second. A two- story prick post supports the second floor summer behind the rear parti- The continuation of the framed jetty on the front, and documentary evidence showing possible hewn side jetties at each story, indicate a late First Period constructional element. Cummings suggests that the building is composed of two earlier house frames later joined together. The rear leanto may also have been constructed at two different dates. exposed frame behind the earlier Iarge room has a 1 1/2-" beveled chamfer with A4-type lamb's tongue stop. Framing members behind the chimney bay beveled chamfer, (both exist.) original room can cat be seen from the leanto.
Brick nogging can be seen within the frame at the right rear corner, suggesting that the leanto behind the addition is contemporaneous with the later room. The roof frame, a principal-rafter system with 4 and 5 purlins per bay and a diamond-shaped ridge pole, corresponds to the second story tie beams. The rear slope of the leanto appears to be integral, at least to the period when the two frames were combined. The old chimney stack was removed when the house was moved. SIGNIFICANT LATER FEATURES The most significant later remains are painted walls and boxing of the earlier second floor room. Big bold S-curve freehand painted sheathing covers the fireplace wall; there is similar decoration over the boxed posts and ties. This probably is 18th-century in date.
The handsome staircase and fireplace paneling of the lower rooms is also of a later 18th-century period, as are the present window sash. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The Burrill House was moved to its present site in 1891 from the corner of Elmwood Road near Monument Ave. to make way for the Frederick Law Olmsted landscape design in conjunction with the creation of Monument Avenue. While the site has long commemorated Deputy Governor John Humphreys, who died owning the original site in 1641, the physical evidence indicates a much later construction date. Presumably, on the basis of documentary evidence, it was actually built by either John Burrill Sr., who owned it from 1700 to 1703, or his son Ebenezer Burrill, who occupied the house from 1703 to 1761.
