SIGNIFICANCE The Solomon Kimball house retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship in the First Period frame of the original single cell core which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C.
The precisely chamfered frame is representative of a larger group of simple late First Period houses- Evidence of a possible overhanging second story makes the house likely to yield important information about joinery practices among Wenham craftsmen. (Criterion D). EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Solomon Kimball House is a 5 bay wide, two room deep, central chimney structure with a c. 1970 addition to the left (west) rear. Exterior clapboarding, a symmetrical facade, simple fenestration and a one story enclosed entrance porch contribute to the late second The earliest portion of the house, built c. 1700, is composed of the right-hand front rooms and chimney bays. The left-hand front rooms were added in the early to mid 18th century. Sometime later in the 18th century, the building was extended to a full 2 1/2 story two room deep house.
2 Story two toor The roof was raised at that time to accommodate the house's increased depth under a symmetrical gable roof. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features are seen in the right hand room and chamber. In the right-hand room, there is an exposed longitudinal soft wood summer beam with inch-and-one-quarter flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The rear girt, the only other exposed beam in the room, exhibits no well-defined chamfer. The front and end walls of the room are ten inches thick, perhaps concealing evidence that there was once an overhang on the house. In the right-hand chamber, the summer tie beam has flat chamfers and tapered stops. Flared corner ,posts have flat chamfers. The girts and plates are unchamfered. The front and end walls of the room are six inches thick.

LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Fireplace wall trim in the right-hand room combines early Second Period raised-field paneling with vertical board and batten doors. Particularly noteworthy is the broad over-mantel panel with three-inch-wide feather edges. Federal trim is found on the small three run staircase and in the upstairs front chambers where fireplaces are embellished with Federal mantelpieces.
