SIGNIFICANCE Old Farm retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship and setting in its First Period frame which embodies distinctive characteristics of form and construction eligible under Criterion C. The frame is a representative example of First Period framing practices in Essex County in the closing years of the 17th century, except in one respect. Molded post heads are generally associated with transverse summer beams. Their use at 0ld Farm combined with a longitudinal summer beam is an unusual variant in framing treatment. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION Old Farm is 5 bays wide, 2 1/2 stories high and two rooms deep in its main body. The left-hand front rooms and chimney bay comprise the original single cell house.
The right-hand rooms and a lean-to were added in the 18th century. Between 1890 and 1900, the house was raised to a full two stories and a new gambrel roof built. In 1911, the house was restored under the direction of Joseph Everett Chandler. A service wing was added to the left (west) side at that time. In 1930, an entrance hall was constructed on the north side, after designs by J. Hamden Robb of Gordon Allen Associates, architects of Boston. The hall was embellished with a Chippendale- style roof balustrade. Bull's-eye glass was used in the side lights of the entrance doorway. The south facade retains its Second Period vernacular character with symmetrical fenestration, sash windows with simple frames, an enclosed, one story entrance porch. A massive central chimney pierces the south side of the gambrel roof at the junction of the lower and upper slopes.
MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES First Period features in the form of exposed decorated framing are visible in the left-hand room and chamber. All framing members are exposed except the longitudinal summer beam. There are inch-wide flat chamfers on beams and posts. Post heads are, in addition, molded with a broad quarter round. The chimney girt, which may have fifhet on either side. designed by Chandler unusual chamfer--flat, with a The chamfer on the chimney girt terminates in lamb's tongue stops at the posts and triangular stops at the summer beam. There are exposed sills in the left-hand room. They appear to from Chandler's restoration. Whether there was evidence of that exposed sills existed originally is unknown.

In the left-hand chamber, there are well-crafted one-inch-plus flat chamfers and taper stops on the summer tie beam, posts, plates and end tie beam. The plates have the added refinement of taper stops on either side of the summer tie beam. In the upstairs and downstairs left-hand rooms, the fireplace wall finish dates from the restoration. In each case the chimney post is chamfered on both sides, indicating that originally, both sides of the chimney post were exposed. The original fireplace wall trim whatever it might have been was recessed behind the post. No framing is visible in the finished attic.
In the cellar, there is a large compartment built into the fieldstone foundation below the enclosed porch, perhaps for cold storage. The chimney foundation, an arch 9 feet wide by 7 feet deep, probably dates from the post-First Period construction of the right-hand rooms or lean-to. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES Chandler added new shadow-molded sheathing on the fireplace walls in the left-hand room and chamber and in the lobby, suitable to his conception of the original finish in those areas. An early two panel door was retained next to the fireplace in the left-hand chamber. In the rear living room (20 feet by 40 feet) Chandler combined First and Second Period features. There are exposed beams and posts. Posts are finished with molded heads like those in the left-hand room.
The stops on Chandler's framing members, graceful lamb's tongues with pips, are, however, more elaborate than the prototypes in the front of the house. All the exposed framing in this room shows more pronounced adze marks than the original framing. Chandler gave the ample fireplace in the rear living room a bold bolection molding. It is uncertain whether the fireplace was reconstructed by Chandler or survived from earlier days. The rest of the finish of the living room is elaborate early Second Period style super-raised paneling with bolection moldings. There are corner cupboards with arched, glazed doors. A garden designed by landscape gardner, Ellen Shipman, remains in more or less its original configuration south of the house.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION Old Farm is an example of a First Period house associated with the early 20th century restoration movement. Restored and enlarged in 1911 by Mr. and Mrs. Alanson Daniels of Boston as their summer home, the house is representative of a larger group of First Period structures which have been preserved on the North Shore under similar circumstances. Old Farm was the subject of an article in House Beautiful in 1921. [1] The restoration is illustrative of the work of Joseph Everett Chandler.
Chandler, a prominent restoration architect in the early 20th century, restored such buildings as the 0ld State House and the Paul Revere House in Boston and the Hooper-Lee-Nichols house in Cambridge. Chandler's additions to historic houses drew upon features of the original houses, but often, the case of Old Farm, finish designs were not limited to the historical precedent of the given period. rhe preservation of the early 20th century "old fashioned perennia] Jarden" designed by landscape architect Ellen Shipman is alsc noteworthy. BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION The Old Farm House is set back from the road in the middle of meadows and fields that are cultivated. 3The line of convenience, drawn around the house, follows the gravel drive on the north side of the house and extends approximately 50' on each side of the house. The southerly line of approximately 100' connects the side lines. The boundary includes the house and the walled garden on the south facade. The barns and carriage house are located a considerable distance from the house. Surrounding meadows enhance the rural setting.
