SIGNIFICANCE The house retains integrity of location, materials and workmanship in its late First Period frame under Criterion C. The survival of a single cell First Period house within a larger structure illustrates the way early small houses grew as needs changed. The combination of an exposed and chamfered Summer beam with boxed framing members seems to be a particular characteristic of late transitional First Period houses; future investigation under the boxing in the east rooms may yield information supporting or contradicting this observation under Criterion D.
EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Timothy Morse house is a 2 1/2 story, 5 bay central chimney clap- boarded structure one cell deep with various 1 1/2 story rear extensions and a new 1/2 story sun porch in a neo-colonial postmodernist style with a large continuous window band. A skylighted gabled roof extends from the right end gable. The main facade has a gabled one-story entrance porch and symmetrically placed 6-over-6 windows with shutters. The house began a one-cell, 2 1/2 story late First Period structure to the right of the chimney, which was enlarged into a two-cell central chimney plan house with an addition to the left of the chimney sometime in the Second Period. MAJOR FIRST PERIOD FEATURES The right (east) rooms on both floors exhibit late First Period chamfered summer beams combined with boxed framing members.
The first floor right room, 15' 6" * 18' 6", has an exposed longitudinal summer beam with flat chamfers and small lamb's tongue stops. All other framing members are The east chamber has an exposed summer tie beam roughly adzed and small flat chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The chimney posts are flared and roughly finished. The chimney tie beam also is roughly finished, perhaps indicating that these framing members were originally In a bathroom behind the chimney, the original 7" x 7" end chimney tie beam is visible; it has mortises for butt-cog joists. The attic reveals a principal rafter roof with two continuous purlins. The right three bays measure each 8' wide, while the left two are c. 7'6" and 7'3", tending to confirm the additive nature of the present plan.
The west first floor room has presently exposed summer beam and chimney girt so roughly adzed that they obviously were originally boxed as all of the other framing members are, indicating a Second Period construction date for the left-hand section of the house. LATER SIGNIFICANT FEATURES The west first floor room has a good typical Federal fireplace surround in a plastered fireplace wall, and simple boxed framing members. chimney, remodeled during the Federal period, has a small "smoke room" into the stairway.
