SIGNIFICANCE The Samuel March House retains integrity of location, design, mate- rials, and workmanship in its First-Period chamfered frame and exte- rior hewn overhangs under criterion C. Its double-cell plan, which survives despite the later removal of the central chimney, exemplifies the manner in which First-Period, single-cell houses were enlarged soon after their original construction to meet the growing needs and perhaps affluence of their owners.
The subsequent replacement of the central chimney with twin interior flues typifies the alterations undergone by many First-Period houses under the influence of the Georgian, (Second Period,) aesthetic. The hewn overhangs on both the front and side facades represent relatively rare survivals of a popular First-Period construction technique. The incised lines for joist mortises on the summer beams contribute insights into how First- Period carpenters constructed houses. EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Samuel March House is a five-bay, two-and-a-half story structure, one cell deep, and presently covered with vinyl siding. It began as a First-Period, one-cell structure (the right three bays) and received a one-room addition to the left of the chimney also during the First Period.
The central chimney block was later removed and replaced with two interior chimney flues which pierce the roof on the rear slope just below the ridge. There are two-inch hewn overhangs on the front second story and on the side second and third stories. The main facade has an applied Georgian pedimented doorway and symmetrically placed Second-Period fenestration with nineteenth-century, two-over-two sash. There is a small added vestibule in the center of the rear facade. MAJOR FIRST-PERIOD FEATURES The house exhibits similar First-Period frame decoration in both sections, indicating that the west-end of the house was added within the same generation as the original building. The original first-floor east room, 17'6" × 19' x 7'10", has exposed oak posts, girts, summer beam, and joists. The longitudinal summer beam has 1.75" wide bevel chamfers with lamb's tongue stops.
Incised lines for joist mortises are clearly visible on the summer beam. The joists are 21" on-center, spacing which indicates a late seventeenth-century / early eighteenth-century date. The east chamber has exposed summer and end tie beams with bevel chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The 7'2" high ceiling is plastered. The rear northeast flared post also has a bevel chamfer and lamb's tongue stops, front southeast corner post is unornamented, possibly indicating a replaced post. The front; flared chimney posts and front plate of the upstairs land- ing, presumably part of the original construction, are all decorated with bevel chamfers and lamb's tongue stops. The joists and the longitudinal oak summer beam are exposed in the first-floor room measuring 15'6" x 19'; the beam has bevel chamfers with lamb's tongue stops and incised lines for joists mortises similar to those in the east room. The joists are 20" on-center. Later boxes cover and the posts; the boxes on the posts stop short of the ceiling, indicating that they were installed after the ceiling was (The plaster has since been removed.) The width of the original fireplace opening is approximately 7'10"; (the distance small central post supporting the chimney girt still remaining in the room). In the west chamber, stops. beaded edge of the boxes, revealing the bevel chamfers and lamb's tongue stops.
The attic shows original 5" × 6" principal rafters still in place, with a pitch of 45 degrees. The roof originally had two common purlins and a ridge purlin which ran the full width of the original three bays. Some of these purlins remain in place, but new 2" x 4" purlins have been added. The three east bays have an average width of 9', while the two west bays are 8' across, indicating that the house grew in two phases.
