SIGNIFICANCE The Chase House retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship and association. It embodies in its type of construction and decorative finish important characteristics of the transition from First Period to Second Period planning, making it eligible under Criterion C.
Moreover, it is one of the key buildings in a small group of six known houses of this type in the Merrimack Valley between c.1700 and 1720. Iraditionally, the bricks were made in the yard of the house , in this case presumably by Chase himself, who is listed here on a 1729 map. But, according to one recent scholar, "the style represents a seventeenth-century house type sustained by one or several professionally associated housewrights living on both sides of the Merrimack River." (Benes, 1986). Among this group is the Peaslee Garrison in Rock Village, Haverhill. (Cummings, 1979). The rarity of these brick houses in the First Period makes the Chase House of great significance in helping increase our understanding of changing craft traditions and domestic this reason it also qualifies under Criterion D for the information it may continue to yield.
ualirien under planning in the early eighteenth century. For EXTERIOR DESCRIPTION The Samuel Chase House, built c. 1715 is a seven bay, two störy, central-hall plan, brick house with gable roof. Originally it had fireplaces in the gable ends, although later alterations created two new chimney stacks inset from both ends in the rear slope of the roof. During the 19th century a wooden rear leanto with Beverly jog to the left side was added to the house. Having undergone restoration and rehabilitation in 1986, the house has a much altered fenestration as a result of later 18th and 19th century changes. The front facade now exhibits a five-part composition with paired windows on either side of the hallway and entrance at both stories set in from the gable ends. The lower story windows are arcuated; the upper story are flat headed.
In the blank spaces, narrower arcuated window openings have long been bricked up and covered with, stucco scored in simulation of ashlar. On the gable to the left of the front entrance, recent removal of a later side porch shows that the belt course continues across the ends as it does at the joist level between the two floors. Iwo small attic window openings (18" x 24") on this east gable end survive; similar openings on the opposite gable were replaced by a later centered sash. Across the rear wall, recent renovation has exposed the original rear fenestration which seems to have nearly matched the front facade.

Georgian house planning within the earlier construction and decorative traditions of the First Period. It is of brick laid in English bond. While the east first floor room and the chamber above it are plastered at the ceiling as well as the walls, the rooms on the west side retain exposed tie beams from front to rear at both stories. Those at the second story mimic the rafter pattern of the principal and purlin roof, running 52" , 78", 78", 92", 78" , 78", 52", across the interior.
The outer bays reflect the original chimney depth, apparently with side closets lit by now blocked windows. The two interior room spaces then have two "summer beams" running parallel 78" apart and a central hallway of some l° wide with arched door openings at both ends. The central hallway exhibits a new straight run staircase, with short turned balusters on a closed string and a 39" newel post, capped with a red pine molded handrail similar to that known to be in the Peaslee Garrison. In the first floor west room the 12"-13" beams are decorated with narrow flat chamfers ending in 2.5" long lamb's tongues. On the second story the beams are each ll" wide, decorated with a delicate reverse cyma without stop running the entire length of the beams.
