The land on which the church was built was part of a 625 acre farm belonging to Forrest his property which included the mill to Judge Hosea Willlams and Caleb Howard who housing for mill workers and in 1841 the name Stratford was given to the growing mill community. Up to this point religious services for the workers were held in a frame boarding house.

Because no one Protestant group was dominant in the community, the building materials and the labor was provided by the mill workers. The land was donated by Forrest Meeker, the former millowner.
