DESCRIPTION Forestdale School stands on the west side of Route 130, set close to the street. Located on a busy street, he school is set on a small flat lot with some oak and pine trees, and a play area containing no structure at the rear. The Forestdale Fire Station (1970) and a paved parking lot abut the school lot to the south Development to the north and west consists of residences dating from the mid-twentieth century. The building is a one-story, wood-framed building standing with its gable end to the street; a lower one-story ell (added between c. 1905 and 1949) extending to the rear. Set on a brick foundation covered sash set in molded cases with slightly projecting caps. Other features include projecting eaves and cornice returns, a broad frieze, and cornerboards. The ell projects from the north end of the main building's west elevation.

It also has wood shingles and a gabled roof. The small brick chimney is centered at the rear of the main building. The facade (east elevation) is symmetrical, consisting of two entries at the first story and a single attic window centered above. The doors are set in surrounds with transoms. Two concrete steps rise to each entry. The north and south elevations of the main block are identical, each containing two windows. The south elevation of the ell has an entry protected by a small shed-roofed enclosure, and no windows. The rear (west) elevation of the main building has a single window (south), with the kitchen ell extending across the remainder of the rear. The original portion of the interior plan consists of an entry vestibule at each of the two main entries, beyond which is the large main room. The ell extends to the west, and consists of a kitchen (E), and two bathrooms (W).

The kitchen entry is now used as the entrance for the building, and the two entry vestibules (E) have been converted to closets. The chimney is located in the main room at the center of the west wall. The original matched board wainscoting has survived. Originally a teacher's platform existed between the doors at the east end of the room. Archaeological Description No prehistoric sites are recorded on the school property or in the general area (within one mile). In general, the property is not well suited for most types of prehistoric sites and subsistence activities. While the site is level and well drained, it does lie well over 1,000 ft. from the nearest wetlands which in this instance is Snake Pond located to the southwest of the nominated property.

Given the above information, the size of the parcel (approximately 1/4 acre) and impacts from school construction, a low potential exists for the recovery of significant prehistoric resources. A high potential exists for the recovery of historic archaeological resources on the school property. Sheet refuse patterns should also be present from student's recreationalactivities and other eventswhich probably occurred around the school building. Prior to construction of the school in 1878, historic period landuse was limited to its use as a woodlot with no known physical remains. (end) 8. SIGNIFICANCE The Forestdale (Greenville) School possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and associations with the late nineteenth century development of the village of Forestdale (formerly Greenville) in Sandwich. It has significance in education as one of the last examples of a district school on Cape Cod, and is significant architecturally as a well-preserved example of a wooden one-room schoolhouse of the late nineteenth century. The school is of local significance, and meets criteria A and C for listing on on the National Register of Historic Places.

The period of significance extends from the construction date of 1878 to 1946 based on its continued use as a school (1878-1926), and then as a community meeting place to the present. Sandwich, established as a town by 1638, is located in the northwestern portion of Barnstable County. Forestdale is an area in the southern part of Sandwich, close to Snake, Pimlico, and Weeks Ponds. According to the Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory form for Forestdale: The community was formerly known as Snake Pond Village or Greenville. The latter name appeared on the1858and 1880 County Atlases, with Forestdale applied in 1907. Like South Sandwich, it is an inland area that generally remained sparsely settled until the modern period.

However, a small settlement node developed between Snake and Pimlico Ponds along the corridor of Falmouth Road (now Route 130) after it was approved as a town way in 1717. Primary development in Forestdale occurred in the early to mid-nineteenth century which was the primary period of growth for Sandwich and Barnstable County as a whole. Federal census figures list 16 families and 100 individuals here in 1790. By 1820 those numbers had grown to 27 and 176 respectively. The 1858 County Atlas shows over 20 houses, a Methodist Church (1846) and a cemetery in the area. The 1880 and 1907 Atlases show little new development, a fact substantiated by the present lack of buildings from that period. The early economy in Forestdale was based on agriculture, which remained important through the mid-twentieth century.

The Greenville School was constructed in 1878 on land identified on Jesse Boyden's 1847 Woodlot Map as Ebenezer Tobey's woodlot # 8 or Richard Allen's woodlot #9. The contract for $734.72 for its construction was awarded in July, 1878 to South Sandwich carpenter Charles W. H. By August 31, 1878, The Seaside Press reported "Our schoolhouse is in a fair way of soon being completed, and I may add that Mr. C. Meiggs is making a commendable display of his efficiency as a carpenter in its construction." In 1887 the village of Greenville lost the use of that name when a post office was built.

Because another post office by that name existed in western Massachusetts, the post office, and consequently the village and school, became known as Forestdale. The Superintendent's Report for 1891-1892 reported five students enrolled: three between the ages of eight and fourteen years, one over fifteen, and one for whom no age was listed. The cost of operating the school that year was $321.59; salaries accounted for $263. The building remained in use as a school until 1927, when a consolidated school, the Henry T. Wing School in Sandwich Village, was opened, replacing 21 district schools scattered throughout Sandwich. The Forestdale School is the last intact survivor of the original group of district schools. Other surviving schoolhouses in Sandwich have been heavily altered and converted to residences.

These are the Spring Hill School, the District School #1, and the Cedarville School, each moved and converted to a residence. The Forestdale School continued tobe used as a community meeting place when theTown of Sandwich leased it to the Forestdale Men's Club in 1926. The lease for $1 per year required that the men's club be responsible for any necessary repairs to the building. Based on historic photographs, the rear section appears to have been added between c. 1905 and 1949; it is not known whether it existed while the building remained in use as a school, or was added by the men's club. The club continued its use of the building until c. 1964. After a period of vacancy the building underwent a restoration and renovation between 1978 and 1980.

The school house was used briefly as a branch of the Sandwich Public Library (1980-1981), the continuously since 1980 as a meeting place for the Boy Scouts, and remains under the ownership of the Town of Sandwich. Recent severe termite damage has resulted in a local effort to nominate the building to the National Register. features of its type. Archaeological Significance Historic archaeological resources described above have the potential to provide detailed information on the social, cultural and economic characteristics associated with the students of a district school in the andwich Village of Forestdale (formerly known as Greenville) from 1878 to 1926.
