(See continuation sheet) (PS Form 10-900-g United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section number _ 7 Page _ 1 Approval No.: Saunders-Paine House Wellfleet (Barnstable County), MA Constructed c.1830, the Saunders-Paine House is a 1 1/2-story, gable-roofed, Cape Cod style structure situated in the town of Wellfleet, near the northern end of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
Sharing the small parcel of land (0.65 acre) are a barn, which has been converted to a summer cottage, and a small shed. The house is set back approximately fifteen feet from the present paved Paine Hollow Road, which approximates an historically important sand road leading to the landing at Blackfish Creek. The property retains a high level of integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship, materials, feeling, and association. Facing south above a brick foundation, the main house displays a clapboarded facade which is five bays wide. The wooden clapboards have recently been replaced and extend nearly to the ground. The remaining elevations, including the two-bay wide gable ends, are sheathed in wood shingles. Along the facade there is a simple, boxed cornice; the eaves are close on the side gables.
Centered on the ridge of the asphalt-shingled roof is a large brick chimney which has been stuccoed except for its cap. The center entrance contains a late 19th century wooden door with six molded panels. Fronted by concrete steps, the door is over-fitted with a modern storm door. A five-light transom caps the entrance, which is flanked by tapered pilasters with recessed panels supporting an entablature lintel with paneled end blocks. A molded cornice at the top of the frame projects slightly above the pilasters. Although retaining their original entablatured surrounds, most of the original 9/6 windows on the main house block were replaced by 9/1 sash sometime after 1992. On the upper level of the east elevation small 2/2 windows are located on the ends adjacent to the eaves, while several 9/6 windows remain on the rear elevation.
Projecting from the center of the rear elevation is a single-story, wood-shingled kitchen ell. The west elevation of the ell is three bays deep, punctuated by a late 19th century glass-and-panel door as well as two small 6/6 windows. On the rear (north) elevation of the ell there is a single 6/6 window lighting the attic. An exterior concrete block chimney rises from the east side of the ell, adjacent to a single 6/6 window. The Saunders-Paine House is set on a 0.65 acre lot which is roughly rectangular in shape and rises slightly in elevation at the northern end. The area around the house is cleared with a backdrop of larger trees. The house itself is set back about fifteen feet from the road with a modern, split rail fence along the front of the property. Two large evergreens flank the .front entrance; several additional large conifers shade the front lawn.

The land surrounding the property is presently residential. The adjacent residence, just fifteen feet to the west, was constructed in 1992. To the north of the main house is a 1 1/2-story, wood-shingled building, measuring eighteen feet square, and capped by an asphalt-shingled gable roof with a skylight on the west slope. A former barn, it was converted to domestic use in 1982. The gable end facing the road, largely obscured by arborvitae bushes and vines, is punctuated by a single 6/6 window on the first floor and an 8/8 window in the attic.
The east side of the barn is without openings while the west side displays two 6/6 windows. On the north end, there is a modern sliding glass door on the first floor and an 8/8 above. To the west of the main house is a non-contributing single-story wooden shed (20' x 14') constructed of board-and-batten siding. The northern half of the building is capped by a low- gable roof with a flat roof section to the south. Vegetation covers much of the building's exterior. The exact date of construction of the shed is not known, it appears to have been remodeled for various uses at different times. Interior Description The Saunders-Paine House displays a typical full Cape floor plan, organized around a central fireplace/chimney block. The stairs are directly in front of the main entrance, with nearly identically-sized chambers on either side.
At the rear of the house is a central keeping room dominated by a large fireplace suitable for cooking and retaining a beehive oven and surrounded by wood paneling and two-part doors. At each end of the kitchen is a small room, one a bedroom and the other a later bathroom. A second set of stairs leads from the kitchen ell to the floor above where there are two bedrooms. The western room on the first floor of the main block is notable for its hand-planed woodwork and high wainscoting incorporating two rows of recessed panels. The mantel displays recessed panel pilasters supporting paneled end blocks and a full entablature. Paned, split door china cupboards are located adjacent to the fireplaces in each of the two front rooms, although the eastern room has lost its mantel. Gunstock posts are evident in the corners of the front rooms.
The house retains wide board flooring as well as plaster ceilings. At least thirteen prehistoric sites have been recorded in the general area (within one mile ncluding several along the shoreline bordering Drummer Cove. The physical characteristics ol the property represent locational criteria which are favorable for many types of prehistoric sites. Most of the property contains well drained level to moderately sloping land surfaces in close proximity (within 1000 feet) to a marine related ecosystems.
This area includes the tidal flats of Wellfleet Harbor and Drummer Cove to the south and may include fresh water springs along the coastline. The environment surrounding the Saunders-Paine House provided a wide variety of both upland and marine related resources which would have been available to Native American inhabitants of the area. The area surrounding Wellfleet Harbor also contains one of the higher prehistoric site densities for the entire Outer Cape locale. Most prehistoric sites types are represented in this area ranging from smaller special purpose type sites, including campsites and resource extraction type sites such as shell middens, to larger multicomponent habitation type sites. Regionally important ceremonial or funerary sites such as ossuaries are also present.
Current information available for the Outer Cape locale indicates the potential for prehistoric sites in the Wellfleet area to span the Early Archaic through Contact Periods. Earlier sites may also be present. Given the above information and the size of the property (0.65 acres), a high potential exists for prehistoric sites to be found in the Saunders-Paine House area. A high potential also exists for the recovery of historic archaeological resources on the Saunders- Paine House property. Since the house, dated to 1830, is still extant and since the barn, which was converted to a summer cottage in 1982 is reportedly dated to the early 19th century, structural survivals on property may be limited to outbuildings. One outbuilding does exist, a wooden shed located west of the main house. It is unknown when that structure was constructed.
