Joseph Slingluff House, a two-story Italianate dwelling built in 1866, is located in a largely residential area of Dover just north of the downtown commercial district, on a corner lot facing the city's primary north-south street. This section of Wooster Avenue includes some of Dover's most architecturally distinctive Victorian homes. Although some two houses bordering the Slingluff House on the west and south are already listed on the The Slingluff House is constructed of brick laid in common bond pattern over a stone block foundation, with a projecting semi-octagonal bay on the facade and an oriel bay on the south elevation (photo #1). 1904-1910 by a wrap-around porch with columns of precast rock-faced cement block (photo #3), a feature common to many older houses in Dover, reflecting the ready availability of this material following the 1904 opening of a precast block manufacturing plant in Dover. The low- pitched hip roof is embellished by a paneled cornice with finely carved paired brackets. The double-door round arch front entry opens to a side hall extending past a staircase with applied millwork ornamentation and a turned newel and balusters. The hall leads to a large dining room featuring built-in china and linen cupboards and a fireplace with a tiled hearth, iron fireback (photo #6), and an ornately carved mantle. Two large rooms on the north side of the hall have carved marble fireplaces (photo #7), crown moldings, and large paired pocket doors between them.
All floors, wood door and window surrounds, and decorated door and a second staircase behind them. One outbuilding, a modern garage built in 1997 on the southwest corner of the property, is a non-contributing building (photo #4). It replaced a diminutive gable-roofed, board-and- batten carriage shed (photo #8) which was too small to still serve as an automobile garage and was demolished in 1997. Other than the windows and front porch, the only other notable alteration has been the modernization of the kitchen (date unknown, mid-late 1900s). Page National Register.
