Storms near this place
11 since 1996Regional context, not property-specific evidence. The National Weather Service names Chemung in 11 storm reports between 1996 and 2025: 3 hail, 3 thunderstorm wind, 2 tornado, 1 lightning. The reports record 1 injury. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date opens the federal record of that event.
| When | Event | Place named | Harm | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September 2001 | Lightning | Chemung | 1 hurt | Newspaper reports indicate that lightning struck a metal building on Route 60 as a plant worker was entering it. The charge was transmitted to the worker who was subsequently injured. |
| September 2014 | Tornado (EF1) | North Chemung | $100,000 | An EF1 tornado touched down just east of Elston Hollow Rd with a path length of 6 miles and a maximum width of 150 yards. This tornado produced 100 mph winds and snapped and uprooted numerous trees along its path. A barn was completely collapsed and one barn had its roof blown off. A pickup truck was lifted and dropped between 6 to 12 feet away. A trailer attached to the truck was dragged up to 12 feet away. Several homes were also damaged. |
| July 2012 | Tornado (EF1) | North Chemung | $35,000 | A tornado touched down and moved up and down over ridges and valleys for almost 14 miles. The first touch down was across Route 1 in North Chemung. The tornado moved east, eventually moving out of Chemung County into Tioga county just northwest of the Town of Lockwood. The majority of damage was to softwood and hardwood trees which were uprooted or snapped. Unlike the extensive straight-line wind damage found to the south of this track, this damage clearly had signs of circular motion in a very concentrated and narrow path. The damage path averaged about 200 yards wide. Some homes, garages and sheds were damaged by wind with trim or siding torn or shingles off roofs. Some homes had more significant damage from trees falling on them. One barn was completely destroyed. |
