“Memorial Church of the Holy Cross is a historic Episcopal church at 841 Bleecker Street in Utica, Oneida County, New York. It was built in 1891 and is a cruciform plan structure with a rectangular nave that intersects two flanking transepts at the apse.”

The storms produced vivid cloud to ground lightning and locally heavy downpours. Five young boys were burned, one seriously, when lightning struck a metal dugout in which the youths were sitting during a little league baseball contest. The dugout itself also sustained significant damage as a large utility pole, which was also struck by lightning, toppled onto it.

On the 19th and 20th, another round of heavy rain fell as a cold front become quasi-stationary across the northeast and a surface wave developed on the front near New York City. Two day rain totals were 3 to 4 inches with the heaviest rain over the Upper Mohawk Basin. Several roads were closed from the flooding.

July 2006Tornado (F0)Utica$2,000A weak tornado touched down about 4 miles north of Utica at 3:30 pm. The tornado snapped or uprooted several trees in a field near Morris Road in Marcy Township. The damage pattern with this tornado indicated a rotational wind pattern, as the majority of trees fell with a northwesterly wind. However, a few of the trees fell with a westerly or southeasterly wind. A nearby witness described strong, swirling winds with rain falling into her house through her window on one side of her house during the onset of the storm, and through a window on the other side of her house toward the end of the storm. Estimated wind speeds with this F0 tornado were about 60 mph.
