A National Weather Service Storm Survey Team found evidence of damaging straight line winds from a thunderstorm, extending from Malta, across Route 9P on the southeast and east side of Saratoga Lake, into Schuylerville. Numerous downed trees and snapped power lines were found, with estimated peak winds of 85 to 100 mph.||In addition, golf ball size hail was also observed in Schuylerville.||Numerous downed trees resulted in the closure of Route 9P, from Route 76 to the City of Saratoga Springs.
Very cold air aloft spawned widely scattered thunderstorms during the evening hours across eastern New York. One cell produced nickel size hail in Malta, Saratoga County.
A severe thunderstorm struck southern Saratoga and eastern Schenectady Counties during the afternoon of August 20th resulting in downed trees and powerlines and large hail. The severe thunderstorm left thousands of customers in the area without power.
