August 2010Flash FloodGreenvale$100,000All lanes were closed in both directions on Interstate 495 in Roslyn Heights from Searingtown Rd. to Glen Cove Rd. with motorists being rescued from high water by the local fire department. In the Herricks section of New Hyde Park, torrential rain caused severe flooding on Allen Street. Four to five feet of water accumulated on parts of the street causing a foundation wall of one house to collapse, rupturing the gas main. Approximately 30 homes had to be evacuated as a result of this. Three homes on Allen St. were condemned as unsafe to inhabit due to cracks or partial collapse of their foundation walls. Property damage amounts are estimated.
