“Criteria Statement: The Ingraham School is a Romanesque Revival building constructed in that has retained much of its original historical significance and architectural integrity. Built during New Bedford's prosperous industrial age, the structure was part of a community development effort to accommodate the educational needs of an exploding immigrant population in the south end of New Bedford.”

Hunt Period of Significance (justification) In 1900, the city of New Bedford acquired land from the Potomska Mill Corporation with the intent of constructing a new school. The city commissioned architect Samuel C. Hunt to design that building. following year, the completed Robert C. Ingraham School opened its doors in September of 1901. The school was full to capacity upon opening and continued to function as part of the New Bedford public school system until the 1970s, when a larger school was constructed.
